My Dad had a heart attack recently...

My Dad is 63, he's diabetic (has to take insulin injections daily to keep it under control...which he's not doing) and he generally doesn't take care of himself (he's overweight and doesn't eat what he's supposed to). Anyway, he had a heart attack about a week and a half ago but didn't go to the hospital until last Monday. He's been in there ever since. The doctors say he needs a triple bypass but that he's not stable enough or strong enough for them to do the surgery.

Anyway, my sister is going to get him transfered to Albany Medical Center to have the surgery performed so that he can be close to family, as soon as he's well enough to survive it.

I'm hoping for the best. Any well wishes would be greatly appreciated. :(

I hope everything goes well. My dad had a double bypass and valve replacement about 15 years ago, and he has been much healthier since then. Hopefully your dad will see this as a wakeup call and treat himself better in the future.

I was in Albany Medical Center a few weeks ago when I had food poisoning on my way to Wisconsin. Nice hospital. I'm sure they will treat him well. Good luck.

Best wishes for your family.
My dad had quintuple bypass and a valve replacement about a month ago, so I know how trying that sort of thing can be.

Yeah, we hope so but it's something he has to want to do...and I don't really think he wants to.

When I talk to him on the phone he sounds fine, except for his breathing which sounds labored, but my sister went and visited him and she said he looks horrible. He has no feeling in his feet because of the diabetes, his kidneys are in bad shape and his legs are all pale and scabby. His circulation is terrible...which is probably why he had a heart attack to begin with.

The fact that he waited about a week to go to the hospital really concerns me too.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and words though.

Hope he has a speedy recovery.

My mom who is 84, had triple bypass March 24th. No symptoms but the Doctors found a blockage in her arteries. Operation was like 5 hour start to finish. Checked out of the hospital 5 days. Nurse who visits her 2 days/week says she is recovering very well. Stiches were removed 2 weeks after surgery. It is recommended that she takes rehab exercises to strengthen her.

A cousin who is 46, also had triple bypass last Monday (Oct 8) and is on the road to recovery. They had him blowing on his thing to measure your lung strength a few hours after he woke up. Nurses says he is doing very well.

Yes the heart is the weak side in our father side of the family.

Here is my dad's story, it is a little difficult for those with ailing parents but it does have a happy ending.

My dad had a mild heart-attack about 5 years ago. He went in for a quadruple bypass and the actually surgery went well.

Post-op there were mild complications. He needed a few pints of blood but he had a severe reaction to the donated blood. In hindsight it would have been better to extract some of his own prior to the operation. He was given little chance of making it through the night due to lung damage from the 100% oxygen that he needed.

We have a lot of physicians in our family (typical Indian's) and as a last resort they decided to have my dad flown to a U of Michigan hospital where they hooked him up to an ECMO (heart-lung bypass) machine. He was in a drug-induced coma for about two weeks while his lungs and heart healed themselves. The first couple of months after he awoke and finally came home were slightly touch-and go but now he is a lot fitter with no physical or mental impairment. Now he watches what he eats and spends a lot of time playing with his grandkids.

edit: he was about 60 and we have a history of high cholesterol on my father's side.

 Wow! 46 and he needed a triple bypass? Is he overweight?

Jules, I'm curious if your dad's condition makes you want to stay more fit? Since I know you ride a bike quite often and such which serves as good exercise.

Glad he survived the heart attack though. My dad wasn't so lucky, but it makes you think about things more.

Good luck and best wishes. My father in law passed away a year ago at the young age of 63.

It sux, he had retired just two years prior.

Hopefully, all will be well with your dad's situation.

Yes, most definitely. I rode my bike to work 3 days this week in fact (Monday, Wednesday and Friday).

I do limit my portions and eat healthy meals with fresh ingredients. I should probably get a physical, because it has been years since I've had one, but I don't have any health issues to speak of and my blood pressure is always normal when I have it checked.

maybe your dad should take his diet seriously and eat better or the next time he may not be so lucky....
