Hello,
I have just recently joined this community although I have been a participant in newsgroups, forums, bbs', etc since about 1978 or so, since April when I moved I have been out a PC at my residence, of course I had access here and there, you know catch as catch can, friends started calling me anti-social because I would visit and become glued to the PC. Anyway having freed up some funding I purchased the following
Asus K8V-X
AMD 64 3000+
2 Sticks pc3200 256mb memory <not sure who the manufacturer is, I could pull the sticks and find out>
1 GeForce2 MX/MX 400 just to get me up and running because I didn't have the cash for a card too then.
1 Lite-On 52x48x52 CD/RW DVD combo drive
1 Floppy drive <I'm old school dontcha know>
A decent case with a window and 350w power supply 2 fans also
windows XP Home w/ SP/2 on the way from new egg, currently using a borrowed copy of XP PRO that is buggier than an ant hill.
Future purchase plans
5:1 speakers
CL Soudblaster Audigy 2 zs
Video Card ???????
19" Samsung Syncmaster monitor not sure of the model number
Ok when I purchased these items I didn't have a computer to research the components like I would have liked to and would surely change now if I could, but I need a little help.
1. What video card should I get, I am playing Far Cry now <albeit barely> and plan on playing HL2, D3, Etc... I would like to spend $200 or less but I am willing to pay more if there's a good reason
2. Are there any significant changes I should make, sell one piece I have and purchase ????
3. I have one problem with the mother board, the lan connnections blinks constantly , by that I mean the cable that is plugged into it has a little light and that blinks rapidly, also the modem ethernet light blinks rapidly in unison with the cable light. I have ordered a 3com NIC card and it should be here today, should I swap out the MB anyway though?
I am very pleased with the general speed of the machine, the video on the other hand especially while TRYING to play Far Cry, blows, I've been killed waiting for the screen to refresh, but I love the game.
I have been building computers since about 1980 or so I have stopped the last 2-3 years or so because I got married and had a bunch of other stuff to contend with besides playing with my PC's. Now I have a little money and some time so I figured I would get reaquainted. Thanks in advance for any help, Peace and Blessings to all.
Jay
