My credit score went up 160 points

Inspired by recent "how do I" credit threads, I went to myfico.com and paid for all three credit reporting agency reports. ~ a year ago this time I checked my credit because I was buying a house, and it was about a 495. There were a lot of inaccuracies, like several accounts I didn't recognize and have had taken off, some accounts reporting late activity incorrectly, one account showing chargeoff that was really just a 120 day late, and Providian credit company trying to charge me for their "account protection" and when I didn't pay it (thinking I had a zero balance), charging me late fees every month and then reporting a chargeoff of $155 to the credit bureaus. The Providian account I had opened in college and called to close, but since I did not get it in writing, got burned badly. They sent me a computer printout of when the charges were applied to my account and when they said I accepted the credit protection program, but the address and phone number information they have for me was incorrect. It's my word against theirs, so it's still on the reports. Even with that Providian account, My score has raised to ~655 on all three reports and should continue to go up as past negative marks fall off and I hassle Providian. So, after a year of work I have almost completely restored my credit worthiness. Yay me!

The moral of the story is, watch your credit regularly because if you don't it may be a much bigger headache down the road. The $38 I spent this year and last has saved me mucho in interest charges on the two houses I own now.

Congrats!! Way to keep at it!

Mine's about to hit absolute rock bottom but I had no choice...a few years from now and I'll be back in shape.

Were you able to get that house?

You would probably get reamed on interest with that low a score.

I actually haven't seen my score yet, but i did run the reports and found a lot of open accounts i didn't know i had, including an account that had a balance that i never had heard of. They took those off/closed them, and now it looks a little better.

I got the house but we used my wife's credit only, since I wasn't working at the time. My wife had a fico of 792 :D so we got a kickass rate. But I wanted to clean my sh!t up so we could both be on the mortgage next time. I mean paying off a house would really help my credit, so when we bought our second a couple of months ago my credit score didn't hurt us at all. :)

I just went to buy the 3 FICO's and credit reports and a warning popped up saying myfico.com's "security certificate has expired or is not yet valid." Makes me hesitant about sending my CC info to them.

Strange I didn't have that problem a couple of days ago. I am sure they have a support department that could help.

Congrats.

I have contacted a reputable "we'll fix your credit" company, after they're done 3 incorrect derogs should be removed from my credit. Thus increasing my FICO score.

They should have to pay you $150 for every single inaccurate derogatory. It should not be your (or my) responsibility to "police" my own credit history when credit reporting agencies have all the power to do just about whatever they please and it takes either a very credit law savvy individual or a lot of money, in any case a lot of time and effort, to 'fix' what you didn't 'break' in the first place.

IMO, anyway.

what exactly does a "Charge Off" mean. A few years back i let my friend use my credit so he was able to get a cell phone then after that we stopped talking and then out of the blue i received a collection letter about the cell phone bill I told them to contact my friend since its his and I dont even talk to him anymore, im pretty sure it was payed by him after that.

I thought it would cost a lot but it's just $99 for 3 accounts.

I can help you find one in your area, what city do you live/work in?

DAM - Order Score Power for $12.95 direct from the credit bureau EquiFax.

If you can verify your identity (they will ask questions regarding your current loans/cc's) you can view your entire credit report AND credit score in about 90 seconds.

You can get them from each agency for $12.95 each. Make sure you also get the fico score with the report else it doesn't tell you nearly as much. I like myfico.com because they have a "what-if" calculator that shows what will happen if you pay off your accounts, etc... It's web-based, and you can print out your reports for hardcopy.

Charge off means that they got tired of not getting paid so they made the debt 'disappear' too bad it doesn't look too good on a credit report.

Who is "they"? Whoever you have the account with, it gives you contact info, etc?

First you should contact the creditor listed on your credit bureau reports. That is the most direct method of clearing erroneous info. If they claim you've never had an account with them or it's been closed since xx/xx/xxxx ask them to confirm this IN WRITING.

The next step is to contact the 3 major credit bureau's and file a dispute in WRITING via USPS Certified mail, everything should be done in WRITING.
