I got a letter from my Credit Card company today, saying that my account had been frozen due to attempted strange transactions/activity regarding my card. So I called them up and they told me that the FBI alerted them that someone had stolen my credit card number on the internet and my credit card company is issuing me a new number. I asked the person from the Credit card company for more details regarding the theft but, all he told me is that he thought the FBI had someone in custody.....
Apparently the person who stole it did not use it because their were no odd charges on the card.

This is really wierd, has this happened to any of you....

Online retailers that I have purchased from using the card
Paypal
Amazon
Espn
Newegg
Mwave

I'll add to list, When I remember more

So... there's some strange charges, you JUST NOW find out about it even thought FBI has been alerted, made their investigation, and has a suspect in custody -all the while your CC doesn't show any strange charges?

<edit>

I made $400 in charges in one day on my Visa. My bank called me personally and asked whether the charges were legit or not before going through any sort of legal investigation. You've got a strange bank, there. :)

That's always something that I hate to hear since I have used Amazon Espn and Newsegg on that list of yours. Not had the same bad luck as you though yet

anyone notice when you goto the page on amazon.com where you enter your login info & password, that it's not ssl encrypted? does that sound like a security risk or am i missing something? not that ive had any problems though.. ordered many things from amazon.com with no mysterious charges..

Search is your friend. Newegg has apparently had a security breach, the warning thread was in hotdeals if I'm not mistaken but the mods didn't give it the sticky people requested.

That sucks, I didn't know that NewEgg had some security problems.

Is that thread still active? Maybe we can re-request the mods sticky it at the top.

is the newegg breach for accounts that have credit card info stored? or does that also apply to credit card #'s from orders?

i never leave my credit card info after making purchases just to be on the safe side.. dont want to go thru a headache like stolen credit card #'s.

I can't find it I searched Newegg in hotdeals and it wasn't there.

I hope the FBI or my credit card company will fill me in on more information later...

D'oh got a letter from my bank today about my debit card info possibly being compromised...

I've purchased stuff from at least all of those sites except for ESPN.

I guess it's Newegg though according to other responses in thsi thread.

*sigh* No odd charges yet, but I guess I have to get a new acc # and card ASAP...

You have an option right below to sign in using a secure server. It probably defaults with the insecure server to save on bandwidth and extra processing.
