My crazy FreeBSD project.

Platypus

Lifer
Ok so I wanted a project for the summer, and I just started to formulate it now. This is pretty random so if you don't care to read any further, don't bother.

My roommates and I built a really awesome bar(lol alcoholic) that is going to rival all. It has a window cut out for a fish tank that will go inside it. Black lights to illuminate it. Black smoked plexiglass counter top for making drinks, a spot for a mini fridge, shelves for bottles, and most importantly a cabinet for my old FreeBSD box. I decided that I wanted to create something unique and I think I am going to do so very soon. I plan to rig up the BSD box to connect to my television, connect it to speakers, and run a massive virtual jukebox off of it, streaming music from my other box. I will use an IR remote control to change songs from within FreeBSD and I will run X on my television display so you can see a playlist. From there I decided to take it a step further. I am going to get an LED sign that scrolls the ID3 tags of the current song on my playlist and mount it on the front of the bar. That way, party guests can see what song is currently going and it will force me to try and get some coding done for it. That's about it, if you've read all this thanks for sticking with me.

Many examples of such code already exist.....'eh 😀

Now if you really want to go out do like the guys I saw a few months ago and fill a cabinet with booze and pumps and make the pc mix the drinks. They had a numeric pad on it to punch in combinations for the drink they wanted, but I'd do it with a web interface! 😀

Wow, impressive... this brings up an interesting webcam possibility..

Can't help you with the FreeBSD project, but might I suggest keeping Black Emperor Scorpions in the tank insted of fish. They will glow under the black lights and it is really funny to watch them eat, as they are very greedy. They like to get a cricket in each claw and one in there mouth, while still trying to use their two cricket filled claws to hold the cricket in their mouth.

What happened to the Speakeasy idea?!

Well, we can put this on a swivel that turns into a bookcase or something 😛

Damn straight... and I better see a fire pole in the closet by the time I get there.

yah its pretty simple you can buy led signs that you just have to seen them ASCII codes through like the serial port or something. It should be pretty simple to code...just make a shell script that every time the song changes pipes the ID3 info to the serial port or what not. good luck though

Why FreeBSD? For such "multimedia"-oriented stuff, linux seems like it would be less hassle.

Because I can? If I wanted a multimedia box I could have easily installed windows too, but I am using an old FreeBSD box that I have lying around, why mess with a good thing?

Seems like a bogus reason. I "can" go get naked and take a crap on my living room carpet, but I probably won't be doing that.

Ok you have a point here. However, BSD and linux are pretty similar, while windows is a very different thing altogether.

but I am using an old FreeBSD box that I have lying around, why mess with a good thing?
Well if you're repurposing it anyways, doing an OS install shouldn't be hard, or take that much time.

I like BSD over linux in many ways, but I realize each has its strengths. Multimedia crap can be enough trouble on linux, and linux is the more "desktoppy" of the two.
