My CPU Temp won't go south

P5b Deluxe (nonWIFI) BIOS 1104
CPU C2D 6300 @3.2 1.325Vcore
Mem Corsair XMS2 PC 6400 5-5-5-12 1.9v
evga 8800GTX at stock. (56C idle)
TR Ultra 120 Extreme with Pull/Push configuration with AS5.
Case CM Centurion 5.

When no OC, I get 38C 36C idle 48C 46C load.

OC @3200 48C 46C idle , 58C 56C load.

my MO temp is arounnd 35C constant. My Room temp is between 20-24C.

Is this normal? I can't get my CPU temp to head south. When I open a side panel, it will go down 1-2C... When I had a Zalman CNPS 9500, my temp was worse which I don't want to mention here...

I have an intake 120mm (1200rpm) fan in rear and push and pull configuration for my TR120E and exhaust 120mm (1600rpm) fan installed inside of the 5.25 inch bay.
I did this because cool air will directly hit my TR120E.

don't see an issue with those temps. prolly best to leave well enough along. 58C at load isn't that bad at that speed

crap.... Those temps are kinda high for stock Ultra120.

I need you to do some work here. Your not going to be happy.

You need to unmount that 120. Then pull your cpu out.

Get a razor blade, and then lean the sharp edge over your CPU IHS. The silver top on the cpu.

Then look to the side and see if you have any really big noticable GAPS on the razor head.

This is a primary flat test.

if you find your cpu not flat your going to need to lap it.

Also by overclocking, and not using the factory heat sink you already voided your warrenty, so lapping would only void an already voided warrenty.

PS. when you submit an rma to intel, you need to submit the stock heat sink. And they will inspect it if you used it or not.
 
I agree, you may have poor contact (HS/CPU) and could benefit from lapping. See this thread that shows my experience lapping my HS and CPU and the temp differences it gave me. Best $20 I ever spent on this machine.

AUTO STORE FTW!!!! Pepboys, Autozone. They will hvae more variety of Sand Paper.

if your ihs is really not flat:

start @ 400 -> 600 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 2000


1000 and 2000 are not really required, but people like me, enjoy mirror finishes. Those 2 will get it for you.


400 is only used when your IHS is incredibly not flat. If its near flat, but just a bit not flat, i recomend starting at 700 instead.

You can get a nice 8x10 piece of glass at homedepot. Probably 220 and 400 grit there as well. Just be sure you get the wet/dry stuff, NOT the dry only stuff. And I agree with aigomorla, auto parts store for the 800 and higher. You really don't need to go beyond 800 by the way...
 
That's the general idea... not too much water, you don't want it pooling. Just enough to help keep the material you're removing wet. You should google around for terms like: lapping cpu or lapping q6600 or lapping guide, etc. as well. There are a few good guides out there. I'd post the url's but I deleted them from my bookmarks.htm a while ago.
 
I lapped my E6400 last night and it dropped about 6C. How much temp drop should I expect ? Do I need to lap my TR Ultra 120 E as well?

nope, now that sounds about right, for a ultra120.

Congratulations on that! Did you take any pics along the way? 6 C is good - I got like -8, -7, -6, -4 for my q6600. Read about it here (pics and temp data in that thread). You may see an additional 2-5 C drop if you do the HS too. I saw about 2 when I did mine.
 
Thanks for helping me drop temps. It seems to me that I am getting an expected result.
I should have taken pics when I lapped my baby. Oh well, I have leftover sandpapers so I'll lap my Ultra 120 Extreme tonight. I'll let you know my results.

heh leave it alone then

as long as you got an increase, it means job well done.

So dont try to squeeze the extra 1C if its that difficult. You might screw up and gain a FEW C's instead.

You can try the black marker test: draw an "X" or scribble all over the base of your HS. Lap it gently with 800 grit or so for 10-15 sec, then look at how the marker has worn off. It's a crude but effective method.
