My cousin won't take his daughter to a circus.

Because he says that circus animals are mistreated. An elephant doesn't just stand up on two feet and balance on a ball, because it likes to do so. It does so, because it is scared of its master who is going to give him a shot with the taser gun, or make him go hungry. He says the same things about the horses, bears and clowns. Ok well not the clowns.

Your cousin is mistreating his daughter IMO 🙂

Shot with a taser gun? Not all animals are trained with violence. Most are trained with positive reinforcement.

Reminds me of the protestors here who blocked off the entrance to the circus here with vans that had "DON'T GO TO THE CIRCUS ANIMALS ARE MISTREATED" spraypainted on the side of them

Circuses and carnivals are scary - that alone is reason enough. Plus they're really old-fashioned, it seems.

My most vivid memory of the circus...

The ring master got done telling us what the animals (horses) were going to do, but left the mic on, which is right next to the ring. The horses start trotting around the ring, and one of them farts right into the microphone. Nothing like a huge fart from a giant animal ass reverberating around a huge arena full of children. The howls of laughter didn't subside for probably 10 minutes 😀.

Ah, memories. Everyone should attend a circus at least once, IMO. I can't stand the clowns either though, I just think of them as guys who like to wear paint and try to get close to children. :Q

My ex-wife won't take my daughter to the circus for the same reason. I have decided to respect her opinion and deal with it.

Depends on the circus. Animal mistreatment is bound to happen at some circus somewhere. If I knew definitively that the animals were being mistreated, I wouldn't go.

I meant I agree with the cousin. I would not take my kids to the circus for the same reasons as his\her cousin.

Yeah...I don't know what percentage of them run it that way, but a lot of circuses use punishment to control their animals, it can get pretty nasty...I've seen a few shows and vids on it.

By taking an animal out of its natural surrounding you are, it could be said, mistreating them. The problem is that often the trained animals are the non-alpha / sub dominant ones and as such they dont need much encouragement to perform ( they crave the attention) BUt when a more dominant male is being trained they need to be taught that the ringmaster is the alpha male, often through violence/loud noise

Elephants are fairly intelligent and social critters, like dogs. I can get my dog to jump through a hoop or whatever without jabbing it in the rear with a red-hot poker.

Circuses are getting better about their animal training, many of them at least. However, nut-whacky animal rights extremists such as the Animal Defense League are not getting any less nut-whacky.

If you wanted balanced and accurate information about the humaneness of commercial animal farms, you wouldn't consult an animal rights zealot whose ideology is so looney that they equate the killing of animals for any reason whatsoever to criminal homicide. You're going to get the same answer, no matter how well the animal is treated.
