AMD Athlon XP 2600+ - $93
HSF - Thermalright SLK800a - $30
Artic Silver Cermique - $6
Fans, Decent but quiet 80mm fans 1 for the heatsink - $20
Epox 8rga+ - $103 (onboard sound and video and lan, firewire, usb2.0)
Crucial 512 MB PC2700 - around $80
120GB Seagate Barracuda V - Around $80-$90
Antec Sonota - $100
CD-RW Drive - $20
MX500 - $35
logitech elite kjeyboard - $25
Samsung 17" LCD Monitor Model 173V - $389

Adds up to $991 wont do well in games(cuz of onboard video), but will be more than enough for a regular use PC, and has a nice LCD and a good not too big, decent looking and quiet case.

I've built computers for relatives as a goodwill gesture, but, if you don't want to be stuck handholding every minor little thing, have him buy a Dell! Let him bug them! That's finally what I had my son do (he's 300 miles away).

Dell has some great deals. Check the HotDeals forums here and at http:www.techbargains.com . Way under $1000!

nice case

get a barton 2500+, the extra cache is nice, its not that much more, and its one of the best overclockers out there (if you decide to)

don't get geil stuff, i'd suggest getting some crucial or buffalo stuff. get either 2x512 for 1G or 2x256. you gotta go dual channel, it helps A TON with onboard video systems.

look at the NEC 19" black CRT its a nice one too.

think about gettin a CD-RW/DVD combo drive, it'll save a few buck

get an mx700 or mx500 for your mouse, they are the best mice out there.

don't get those speakers. its not worth it to skimp on sound and get crappy stuff when u can get good quality for only 30-40 more (like a logitech z-640 setup)
