My cordless keyboard and mouse work irregularly, why?

Hi there!

I have just switched to a cordless Logitech kb and mouse but they don't work everytime I start the computer. Sometimes I have to re-boot the system to get them working the way I want, and sometimes they work fine the first time I try (I have tried to change the batteries so that should not be the problem and even cleaned the hard drive once).

I would of course be grateful if you can help me solve this problem.
 
I had a similar problem when my cordless was plugged into USB. When I used the PS2 connections things worked fine.
