So, I got up on campus a few weeks ago, and i used to to mirc alot. The school uses this stupid Cisco Clean Access Agent that messes up people's computers more than it helps and they use McAfee enterprise which merely makes sure the servers aren't infested, but anyone on the network is ok. So because of both of those, i had to uninstall my 3 year subscription to McAfee AV, which is the first thing I'm pissed about. I pay over 100 bucks for this antivirus and I cant use it on Campus? WTF?
But I deal with it. Then I load Mirc. Mirc doesnt work. Change the port, it still doesnt work. So i finally got around (and by around i mean the patience) to call ITS about it. The kid tells me

"Oh Mirc is blocked."
"Why?"
"Because people use it to download torrents"
"No people use torrentspy and other such trackers to download torrents"
"Oh, well, its blocked due to piracy and downloading"
"Then why dont you block AIM, MSN messenger, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, Trillian and other such chat programs as well since they can be sued to "pirate" as well"
"Oh well i think we'd have a lot more complaints if we blocked them.
"Well consider this your first complaint about Mirc. "
"Listen, all i can tell you is that mirc always has been blocked and always will be"
"No"
"excuse me?"
"You dont know what you're taling about. I used it last year for Tech support. Companies such as Winamp and many engineering companies also use it for tech support."
"Well i cant control that"
"Then tell me someone who can"
"One of our network adminstrators"
"Like who?"
"Um I dont know"
"Great you've been a huge amount of help " *click*

I Hate how schools put people with no such intelligence about computers into an ITS job. Do some research yourself, dont just follow what they tell you, idiot!

Sucks.

You know, I find it sort of amazing that network technology has come that far along. Wonder if you can find some encryption tunneling software to get past it...

First off yes, i needed to be that much of an asshole to people who dont know what they're talking about. No, xchat doesnt work, nor does mirc or chatzilla. I think they somehow blocked the entire protocol. I'm triyng to figure something out. One of my friends *said* he had a successful vpn tunnel to his house but im not quite sure

Just get another ISP. IT will not open up an application just for one little kid who knows just a little bit more than the next door Joe.

Bah, get a shell account somewhere and IRC from there. No need to explain, you seem to know it all.

OP must not be well versed in mIRC.

mIRC has always been used for pirating. Its been around way before the time of Pirate Bay, Torrent Spy, Kaaza, Bearshare, and all this other p2p crap that is out there nowdays. With all the P2P sites getting sued, I'm sure mIRC activity has picked back up. mIRC along with NNTP has always been known as the underground.

Who told you to uninstall your macafee virus scan?
AFAIK... the cisco product is supposed to disconnect you from the network (via port locking) if your antivirus and windows arent up to date. Its not a virus scan itself

Let's put it this way. The technician at the other end probably does standard help desk calls and is probably told that certain protocols, services, etc are blocked because they are known avenues for downloading and uploading illegal crap (like mIRC). The intricacies behind this doesn't need to be explained to him or to you because it's THEIR rule. Don't like it? It's simple. Live off-campus.

Yep. Mirc is what I used back in my music download days. :) The tech was correct he just used the wrong termanology.

"Because people use it to download torrents"

Should have been

"Because people use it to download music and software illegaly."

Agreed. I used to hang on Newnet servers and frequent Warez-underground and a few others from 1995-1998. Up untill they started cracking down on the warez scene. When the internet was not so heavily regulated.

You sound like a prick buddy.

That ITS person is just there to answer the phones and help with technical issues, not change policy.

Maybe if you took 2 seconds to consider this you wouldn't be posting it on here.
