My conscience needs some help

I'm having a problem with some free money.

Here's the situation: February 2006 I bought some furniture at a well-known online furniture store. I bought it with the knowledge the furniture would not be shipped for 6-8 weeks per the info in the website. At the time, the "special" was saving 20% of the total price. We're talking about a few thousand $$ in merchandize. The shipping was outrageous (like $900) but with the money saved (20%) it was a wash.

Well, 8 weeks goes by, then 10. I realized in late May that the shipping date on the online shipping status had changed to June! I called the CS rep and they were very nice and refunded like $400 of the shipping. I was satisfied.

Then, July comes. The shipping date suddenly changed again to late July. I made a series of phone calls to the company and got nearly the remainder of the shipping refunded. Sweet! The furniture finally arrived in mid July, perfect. My credit card was billed for essentially the original furniture price (20% off) and free shipping. The delay was a pain but I was happy.

Ok, suddenly this month I check the credit card statement online. The store had refunded the entire shipment price. I have thus paid nothing for a room full of furniture.

I have been waiting for a letter or email or phone call from the company. Maybe their way of making up for a bad experience? This was now two weeks ago and my conscience is begging me to call the company and attempt to explain their apparent mistake.

So torn. Any advice?

if they don't find it, thier loss no? i would contact them just to make sure that they don't bill me later. you decide.

You know what you have to do.

Your pizza was more than thirty minutes late so it was free. Stores implement policies like this so you don't go around gabbing to your friends about how much they suck because their service is so slow. It's hush money. Angry former customers can do a lot of damage to a business.

brains... must eat brainsss....*shamble*

you said they nearly refunded the rest of the cost... sounds like they did. i wouldnt sweat it, or feel bad for getting a discount

Nah I wouldn't contact them. Just wait and see if they call. They refunded you so let it go and be happy.

As many mistakes that companies have made where they end up getting more money and I get screwed or someone else gets screwed out of money I say it finally balances out for once. Or if someone there was just being generous because of the bad experience you had to go through then enjoy it.

You know, I'd probably end up contacting them about it, simply because I wouldn't want a big charge to pop up later if they figured out they didn't want to give my money back to me.

WTF?! are you a priest?

you dont have more things to worry about in life than free $?

just put that $ aside for a few months. if they contact you in that toime frame, just pay it back.

I'm willing to bet they'll realize their mistake sooner or later, and attempt to retrieve the money. So whether your conscience can be quieted for a few thousand or not, don't even think about spending that money in the next 6 months.

Edit: If it was me, i'd probably put the money into a savings account and let it earn interest while I wait for them to discover the error.

Sounds like they made a mistake, you should call them. It pains me to see how many people say keep it, I'd bet big money those same people would have a fit if they were over charged.
Do the right thing.

So you ordered in Feb. and got your stuff in July what a load of crap. I wouldn't even be comfortable if these people had my CC number, and would probably contact the bank or CC company for a new card. You can call if you want but don't be surprised if the rep on the phone has no idea what you are talking about and you have to waste hours on the phone to clear this up.

If you really feel bad mail a check with a letter of explanation to the company after you get a new credit card. If they cash the check you feel better, if not you still feel better and got free stuff b/c you did your part.

how is this even a question? you know what you need to do.
empty out your checking account.
move to a diffrent state.
change your name to something like "joe smith".
take job at walmart.
use the %10 off and the free money to buy a HD TV.

or call them up and tell them what happened.

Call them and ask if they did that on purpose. They may be trying to buy a little goodwill after the caused you some problems. You'll feel better in the long run if you do the right thing. Conscience is a heavy burden.

 people don't have such simpleton perspective on life as you.

Nothing illegal about not saying anything. If you tried to somehow get free furniture without paying, that'd be different. It's very likely they'll realize it, and charge you anyways.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to hold on to the money for a month and if my CC isn't billed, again, I'm calling them.

If the $900 for shipping was roughly equal to the 20%, we're talking about $4000-5000 worth of free furniture? I'd give the money back.

I wouldn't wait a month to do it, I'd do it now. If you bring it to their attention they may be nice and give you another discount or something. If you're going to do it you're going to do it, I see no reason to wait.

I would have to give it back. I could not enjoy the furniture knowing that I did not pay for it and it was not a gift.

Everything is on a wheel.
