I just setup a new modem in this computer. It is a 56k modem, but for some reason it only is connecting at 31,200 bps. My other slower computer with a 33.6k modem on it connects at 56,000bps. Any ideas why this is happening, and how I can make the current connection faster?

Thanks

It sounds like windows is reporting the bus speed of the old modem, ie the speed which windows send data to the modem. It is not actually connecting at 56k, but probably 31k like your new modem.

I have only seen a modem actually connect at 56K, once and it was a friend who lived two blocks from the CO. If your old computer said it was connecting at 56k, it lied. Not really, DazedAndConfused was sort of correct. It was reporting the port rate/speed. (Bus speed? I don't want to know how slow a computer would be if it had a 56kb bus. Realize, I'm just picking on you 🙂)

The computer opens the COM port at 56kb and then uses flow control to adjust down to the actual speed of the connection. Back in the old days we used XON/XOFF, now days modems have hardware flow control.
