Dear MegaWorks:

Did you build this system yourself or is this a brand named manufactuered computer ?

If you built it yourself, please check to see that the wires coming from the power button (and other power functions) of the computer are on the CORRECT pin buttons located on the motherboard (get out the old instruction book for the motherboard and look at the diagram where it will show you the ORDER for the power wirings to go on the pins on the motherboard). Make sure you get ALL of the wirings on the correct pins and ALSO make sure they are on in the right direction, i.e. positive and negative pins oriented in the right direction. This can be very confusing to get these in the corrrect positions, I know I have to study them VERY closely every time I put a system together. Also, I think different motherboards have different skeems for the ordering of these connectors. Good Luck.

WOW! I never thought of that! I'll look into it.

Hi, I know this is going to sound wierd, but I just had a young lady bring a Compaq running 98SE in with the same symtom. Tried everything, but couldn't find a reason. Tried to set up her LAN in order to move some diags with no success. Noticed that she had a Wireless card as well as the LAN card I was trying to use. Pulled the LAN card and magically the Compaq began to behave itself. I still don't beleive it. Maybe this will help someone. Luck, Jim

Hmm. The comptuer thats doing it to me doesnt' have a lan card, but it has onboard lan and a wireless card. I might try disabling the lan at some point to see if that helps.

DUDE,, I've had that happen to me quite recently on my old comp as well.. It had a bad BIOS chip,, Call up ur manufacturer and order a new one, they'll generally do it for free.

I solved the problem, but I can feel that the bios is unstable.

I think I'll order one thx!

How'd you solve the problem?

To be honest I don't know , I just played around the bios I don't even remember what I did. I can shut down now but sometimes I get lock ups.

I know now that my borad needs a bios chip change I'll contact ABIT for a new Chip.

definately not a virus; he reinstalled windows and it still happened.

Have you tried pushing the power switch while in Windows?
if you check power management you can set the power switch to shut your computer down.
try it that way too.
