My computer won't reboot

So I tried to factory reset my laptop (windows 7) and what it started to do was an system restore to an earlier stage. After waiting over night (12hours) and less then 1/4 of the restore done I decided to cancel it, this resulted into my computer not functioning correctly and now when I try to turn on my laptop, it goes into a "Startup Repair". when this happens it tells me everything else works fine other then;

Boot sector for system disk partition is corrupt

Repair action: Boot sector repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490
Time taken = 352313 ms

I am not trying or need to save any files, iv tried everything I know and searched online but no solutions would help. I'm not sure if there is an easy way to factory set my laptop it I can got it to boot up...??

I dunno if this information is needed but my laptop is a toshiba x500.

Unfortunuitally that hasn't help, when I try to hold 0(zero) all it does is make it longer before my laptop makes it to "Startup Repair" and then it switches off if I try to get past the Startup Repair

If you don't want to save your files could you not reinstall windows from scratch?
I found a site which had the windows 7 iso image, burnt a windows7 disk and booted from that for clean install.
Check your hard drive first

What made you decide to do a restore in the first place? Was there something wrong with it? Do you have an extended warranty on the laptop?

For recovery, you can also try booting with F8 >> System Recovery >> Toshiba HDD recovery, but I have heard that will only reinstall Windows, so you would need to get the rest from the Toshiba site.

If you want a full recovery, the next best thing would be to order restore discs from Toshiba, unless you made some with the included utility when you got the laptop.

I can't check my hard drive as I can't log onto my computer hence I need someway to factory set from before startup. I will try the disk and hope it works.

I wanted to restore my laptop the moment was full and it had a few Trojans and I didn't want to keep most of the software and file in there. I had transferred all the files I wanted to keep so all my files that I want are safe. There is no option for F8 on start up, on F2 and F12, neither of which had helped although I wasn't so sure what I was doing...

I meant check it with a bootable cd. I am sure toshiba must have their own set of harddrive testing tools.

I'm just wondering should the disk still work even tho my laptop doesn't boot up properly, I get past the toshiba logo >> windows loading files! And that's where Startup Repair starts and I can't get passed that. If I try my laptop just shuts down, and if I try to use advanced options for system recovery and support >> "you must log in to access system recovery options. If you are having trouble logging in, please contact your computer administration for assistance. Click OK to restart the computer" and my computer then just restarts and the proses happens all over again...

You were in the middle of a system restore when you stopped the machine. The restore point was probably full of viruses if they had been on your computer for any significant period of time, leading to difficulty with the restore. So, it is only natural that Windows is not sure what to do at this point.

So the answer is, it's hard to tell. There could be a file system error, or there could be a physical disk error. It could just be the viruses. It is too hard to say at this point.

However, I would recommend running Seatools for DOS and burning it to a CD. You can boot your computer off the disc and do a full scan. If it comes up fine, you should be good with a reinstall. Here is a link:

Research what version of Windows your key is for, you can even contact Microsoft for information and perhaps even what image to download. On a website called digitalriver.com there are several iso images of Windows setups. Either ask the nice people at MS or find out for yourself what to download and where. Burn it to a disk and clean install windows after you do a format (which you can do in the Windows setup). Your problem will be solved.

Will it work for a toshiba branded hard drive?

Someone told me the newer versions don't attempt to fix the errors it finds on non-Seagate drives, but if it finds problems at that level, I don't know that it would matter.

I never had this problem, but I use an older version.

Okay so I want to say thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help everyone provided.
I solved my problem with the help of my friend who give me a lend of a windows 8 CD. This helped boot up my laptop and from their we were able to install windows 8 (not sure if I like it 😛) but now my laptop is functioning, for the most part. (I need to replace the fan and cracked cover) so the solution is to have an OS disk to boot up the computer.

That's what we were suggesting but we advised using seagate tools a bootable cd to check your hard drive first.
