My computer started beeping! How do I stop it?

Hi there,

My machine works perfectly, and I've never had problems with it.

However, I noticed something strange today.

It has started beeping while performing certain functions. Like, for instance, when I empty the Recycle Bin... normally, if I have my speakers on, I only hear the "rustling sound" or whatever they call it in Windows Schemes. But now, it beeps from the internal speaker as well.

It also beeps when I do something like trying to erase some file that's still being used - what is called an "Exclamation" in teh sound schemes, if I remember correctly.

Now, i don't want the machine to beep, especially since 1) I didn't do anything, as far as I know, to enable the use of the internal speaker for such purposes and 2) I don't particularly like the sound.

The only reason I can think of as a cause of the beep suddenly "turning on" is that I had a power outage over the week-end, and the computer was shut down by the blackout.

So what do i do now? How do I disable the blasted speaker?

ok then, check the Sounds and Multimedia applet in the control panel, see if any of the associated wav files for actions are missing.

What motherboard do you have? Any beep form the box itself aside from one at startup is usually an alarm of some sort. It's possible the power outage took out a fan and something is getting too hot for the motherboard's liking, but you'd get that during any intensive application.

She said it does the sound, but beeps "as well"...if I understood correctly.

Exactly... it does the sound, but beeps "as well"... The motherboard is ASUS P4P800 Deluxe. I don't think there's anything wrong with the temperature or something like that, the sensors indicate everythings' normal. And all the schemes in "sounds" are intact and present.

Go to your device manager, and, under the view menu, choose "show hidden devices." Now scroll down to Non Plug and Play drivers, and see if you have a "Beep" option. Open the properties for this, and click on the driver tab. You should see a startup section. Scroll down the list here, and choose disabled. This will disable the annoying system beeps.

But read it first, to see if it's trying to tell you about a dead fan or other hardware problem.

Odd that it started happening all of a sudden though. Oh well, glad it's fixed.
