Hi there

This is my first post here and this place looks quite cool

What my problem is, is that my computer is so loud! I make music and all I can ever bloody hear is the fans and buzzing sounds. What can I do? I want to buy a new case anyway so if it is alos the power supply fan that could be rectified with a new case right? If you could recommend a case and whatever else to make it super quiet that would be brill as I get paid on Wednesday. Im pretty sure it is the big metal block and afn I think on top of my chip. I have an Amd athlon xp 2000 chip and my motherboard is a gigabyte if that is any hep. Oh by the way, if you havent noticed Im a bit of a novice.

probably the heatsink/fan you use for cooling your CPU. There are lots of after-market alternatives that you can get for $20 - $30. I'm sure others here can suggest good specific heatsink/fans to buy.

ok cool, could you possibly give me a great setup for a quiet computer if you have time on your hands, its just Im real rubbish at choosing the parts which will work well together and really do not have a clue, what im gonna do is order the parts and then pay someone to fit them.

Sorry to be a pain, i do appreciate you posting back

Look at the larger heatsinks that use larger 80 mm. fans that spin slower to move the same amount of air as the smaller fans with higher RPM. Also, fans with double ball bearings tend to be quieter and last longer.

Zalman 7000 al-cu for the CPU

Antec 3700-BQE or Sonata for a case.

Another vote for the 3700-BQE, but I'd say maybe a ThermalRight SLK-800 (or 900, but with that or the Zalman, don't move the PC much) and Panaflo L1A.

Another fan to look into are the ones made by NMB. Very quiet and they run forever. I have an Antec SX635BII and have it outfitted with NMB low to medium speed fans and a TruePower power supply. Makes for a nice quiet system.

A good case for quiet is the Antec Sonata. It comes with a good PS, and a single 120 fan. 120mm fans = quiet. You can add a second 120 fan on the inside for intake. Thermaltake make a smart fan 2 80mm that is real nice for CPU, moves a lot of air and is not loud when turned down a little. (mine is quiet at 3500 rpm on a slk947u 38C idle 1.75v xp2500 2.3ghz overclocked)
Another option would be an aluminum case (Lian Li) with two 80's in and two 80's out using the smart fan 2 setup) Oh yea, these fans come with a thermal sensor, a rheostat, and 4 pin adapter for great flexibility. You can get them for $11 online.

easiest way...sonata. then a good cooler, zalman or slk series with low rpm fan. if more hardcore get silent passively cooled psu, those cost a bit more, and passive cooler for video card if loud. harddrive models vary on noise level, and most are loud, if fan noise is lowered,a loud drive will ring through and destroy your efforts. fan speed controllers also good. but sonata only has one case fan anways....

The Sonata is a bit smaller than the 3700, both are medium sized (4x5.25" + 2x3.5"). Don't try to go too small, your stuff will get crammed and the airflow will be lower.

ok cool kinda got it

Just opened my computer to have a look, and the only fans I have are the one on the metal block(what is this metal block called?), and a small one over a smaller metal block called, which plugs into a port which says
NB-FAN. What is that? And sorry, will the case come with a power supply?

If not the one I have is a chieftec ATX pfc ball bearing big motherf...ker

Cheers so much for your help guys

look at a moterboard picture. The big metal block is the CPU heatsink, and little one is surely the north-bridge (NB) heatsink. If you're having trouble IDing stuff and all, a digtal camera can help :)

I recommend the Thermaltake Silent Boost. I have one and it works great at whisper quiet noise levels.
