My computer slows to a crawl every time I try and open a self-installing .exe file

Everything else works fine, just these installers seem to be giving me trouble. Any ideas?

First thing I checked... could be something really f-in' sneaky, but I can't find it. Know of any virii/malware that would have symptoms matching this description?

Adware and Spybot have been off my radar for 8 months. They've both been compromised (especially Adaware). Use Microsoft's anti-spyware or Webroot's SpySweeper.

When you open those .exe's, does your CPU shoot up to 99% and stay there?

I dont know, it slows down so much that taskmanager takes like 20 minutes to open up.
