On a friend's system...

"When I open "My Computer" it has to search for the drives; (Flashlight Icon) for about 10 minutes. But after it finds them it is ok till i reboot or shutdown. Also, when I start programs like AOL they soon crash and report that there isn't enough virtual memory available (When I have windows set it automatically)."

Additionally, when I look at task manager, waol's memory usage sky rockets till it reaches the max of the page file. What could be wrong? Seems like a memory leak, but that doesnt seem right with a large program like AOL 8...

They are seperate problems.

1) When I view "My Computer," it searches for drives for like 10 mins...

2) When I open up AOL, it sucks up all of the RAM and the Virtual Memory thus prompting an error.

3) Overall the system is just shakey... (I would reformat it, but my friend preferably doesn't want to).

The reason I mentioned it because I have users who have had similar problems and removing AOL from the start up menu helped. Have the drives been defragged recently?
