my computer likes to kill cd rom drives =(

The problem started a few days after I jumpered my Plextor 12/10/32A so it could run in DMA2. All of a sudden my Kenwood 72x died on me! The power wouldnt work and I tried it on two other computers. I figured the drive just failed on me (luckily the warranty was still good). I installed an ACER and a few days later it died on me also.

WHY??!! AAaargh. Do you think its a problem to have a drive running in DMA2 and my plextor in PIO mode on the same channel?

get a ohm meeter and do a reistance test and voltage check if you have any monitoring softwear monitor and watch for any voltage spikes other than that beats me
 
I do have the same CD-RW and CD-Rom and sure wouldn't jumper the Plextor now! Unjumper the Plextor and get a new CD-Rom. Sometimes things are better left off what they use to be!😎
 
ok guys sorry to bug you but i installed motherboard monitor 4 to see how my voltages were doing. it reports the 3.3v at approx 3.52v right now and the alarm went off cuz of the 5% difference. -12v is at 11.7 and +12v is at 12.7.

do you think any of these voltages could of killed my two cd roms? its really weird cuz only my plextor drive survived both times <lol>
 
I've been running my Plextor 12/10 with the jumper for like 6 months without a problem (on same channel with Pioneer DVD). I really doubt that's the problem. Your voltages are kind of high though. You should be able to adjust the 3.3 V with a jumper on the mobo (seems like it's at 3.5V now). Most likely it's your PSU.
 
I have a P3 600E @800mhz on an ASUS P3V4X using the onboard monitor. I hope thats the info you requested, i'm not really sure what PSU means... 🙂
 
PSU = Power Supply

It could be your power supply. Borrow a friends or something and test it with a new power supply. 😉
 
great i'll give that a shot! i have a 250W power supply BTW. oh and where would i jumper the motherboard to adjust the voltages? especially the 3.3v one. should i even bother? do you think the readings could be a little off? i remember hearing aobut the ASUS boards having poor temperature sensors, but it might be different for voltage readings. 😕
