My computer keeps freezing while i play far cry. While i play, the computer stops respoding except for the sound that was playing when it froze. The sound just keeps repeating very quickly like the sound of a machine gun firing, but quicker. i turned off agp fastwrites but that did not solve the problem. I looked at the task manger to see the performance and my cpu spike often. Also, far cry is running at 50-120 fps, nothing lower than that.

Amd 64 3200, evga 6800, aopen ak89 max, 512mb, 80gb, windows 2000. My gpu is running at 56 C not running anything and 59 C after playing couple hours of Far cry.

No one replies in the video sections..... :)

I was kind of having a similar problem. Except for me, You could only play a game for about 10 minutes before it quit on you. We just had to change the RAM timings, and the games started to play with no problems. Perhaps it can help you. But maybe you should wait for someone to confirm this, because I am not sure if this is a solution to your problem.

Do you have a spare drive lying around? Try doing an install of 2000 or MAYBE 98, I guess you could do XP.. then reinstall everything and try the game out agian, making sure all chipset drivers are installed. If it still doesn't work it could be a hardware issue..

anything overclocked? just because the sound repeats doesn't mean it's sound drivers as some people have suggested.

there is definitely something unstable in your system...i know this exact same thing used to happen when i o/c'ed too far.

also, try general hardware.

I have not overclocked anything. This is exactly what happens--
I play Far Cry for like 5-15 mins and then I shoot my gun and the gun sound keeps repeating and the computer freezes completely.

My temps on everything is stable.

When you load the game try and check the processes that are running.
Perhaps one is running away as they say in Unix or not responding in win lingo.

my comp freezes when i play cs consider yourself lucky. someone chucks a nade it freezes for like 10sec than goes back smoke makes my fps 4. sometimes when i am in game and shooting someone i lag. i am guessing its your video card have u ran the 3dmark? does this happen in other games or just this one could just be the game.

if you didnt run the 3dmark do and tell us what happen. if that doesnt work than do memtest. i dont think its your sound card its just the game when it freezes it does that.

Curious if anyone has found an answer to this because I have the same problem.

Installed newest patch. Game crashes to desktop with no errors. SOmetimes I can play for 2-5 minutes. SOmetimes it does it during cutscenes. I have tried the latest WHQL drivers for my video card as well as two older versions. Uninstalled/reinstalled in SAfe mode so ther were no reminents of another driver. I disabled all fierwall/anti-virus programs. Disabled countless services. Tried the suggestions located
here. and the game still crashes to desktop.
System specs.
Processor P4 3.2e
RAM 1GB Kingston HyperX 3200
Video XFX 6800GT w/256MB RAM
SB Audigy w/latest drivers
XP pro w/sp2
All OS updates.
Processor, RAM, vid card all at default speeds, nothing overclocked.

I had a similar problem on my rig with Simcity 4K. However in my case I used to get a BSOD ...

I installed older drivers and it wored like a charm :) ...I suggest you do the same.

I had this problem with far cry, too.
I had a driver conflict with one of my sound cards (Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96) as it was competing with my Soundblaster. I just disabled the Aardvark everytime I played (since it wasn't a gaming soundcard), and it solved the problem.

If all the drivers are up to date, perhaps you could try changing the soundcard's PCI slot. Or you could try a fresh install of all the drivers.

Strangely enough, I actually upgraded to the latest sound drivers right before I installed far cry. I have tried everything else so I might as well uninstall the sound drivers and install the original ones off of the cd.

Also I am going to run the 3dmark05 program to see if it gives any clues as to waht's going on.

I just ran 3dmark05 and after about 4 or 5 scenes my pc automatically rebooted??? When windows came up it reported that it had recovered from a major crash, etc.

Does 3dmak have anything to do with sound (becasue I never heard any sound while running it)?
If not, then maybe my problem isn't sound drivers.
Still might go back to the oroginal audigy drivers, just want to see if anyone knows about 3dmark05?
