My computer keeps crashing while playing BF2

Antec P180B Case
Asus P5B Deluxe
2GB DDR2 800 Patriot Ram
E6300 @ 3Ghz
ATI X1950XT video card
Samsung 225BW

My computer will run it really well for like 30 min then all of a sudden it will restart and say I had a driver stop error.

Well it looks like my drivers for my video card may be old. What's the best way to update to new ones? Uninstall the old ones first or what?

1. Run Memtest all night
2. Check PSU rails, or pull it out for another one
3. Format

Do those 3 you'll probably find your fix. Its the most common stuff. Otherwise you could have a faulty mobo/GPU ect.. but if you do 1-3 you'll eliminate the "biggies".

anytime my PC starts to crash in BF2, I know if's time to get a can of air and a vacuum and clean out the ole heatsink

I second this. It could just be an overheated vid card. Just do it outside.
To update the driver, just download and run this.

Alright, well, I have a setup with a Core2, alright?

My system runs fine, alright?

EA has a reputation for crash-loving games, alright?

I try to turn on X-fi features, alright?

And when I do, the game exits and takes me to the desktop, alright?

EA sucks, alright?

But I bought the game when it was still new, alright?

EA still sucks, alright?

No, it's not alright. What the hell is wrong with you?

Run riva tuner and see what your temps are on your video card, my card has hit 90C while playing BF2 before and it never crashed, but man 90C was extremely hot, I would put my hand anywhere near the card and I would feel heat coming off of it. That was with my old 7800GT, my 7900GT usually doesn't go above 70C.
edit: oh, I didn't see that you have an ATI card, idk if riva tuner works for ati cards though.

When I first got BF2 I never patched it. When I got my X-Fi which came with a BF2 X-fi update I did NOT update. Game works great. EA has been a PITA lately. When I first bought NFS: Most Wanted the game actually UNINSTALLED NFS: Underground 2!!!!! I then installed NSF: Most wanted again and it worked fine, so I go and install NFS: Underground 2 and guess what? It uninstalled NFS: Most wanted! What I did was install NFS: Most wanted, copied the entire directory to another HD, installed NFSU2, which took off NFSMW, then copied the game back to a directory and went to get a nocd crack for NFSMW. That was the only way I could play both games I legally own.

Obviously your overclock is NOT stable.

As per previous poster suggestions, try running at stock.

Yeah, take your overclock down. There were some well-known issues with certain video cards on certain platforms, notably the 6800 series on AMD NF3 (and some report on NF4 as well), that caused hard locks and faults such as the dreaded nvdisp_4 endless loop. But this one really sounds like just a slightly unstable system.

Yeah, first use compressed air to remove the dust, and try running the card at stock settings to see if this crashing still happens.

My video card is at stock settings, I'm assuming. I've ran Prime 95 for 5 hrs with no problems and Orthos for 5 hours also with no problems.

you need to run orthos, both cores for 12+hrs. also, you may want to run 1 f@h client for the cpu and 1 for the gpu sinc ethat way it will fully stress the gpu and cpu. also run memtest for 12+hrs too.

with the video card did you unlock it and let it speed up during gaming? try to lower those speeds too.

check temps ( I recommend coretemp )
run mem test
check psu reading with a digital multimeter
try other games to see if it's just bf2

btw: If your want a widescreen fix in bf2 put the bolded in your target "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1+szx 1680 +szy 1050

while it's not true widescreen it's better than playing 1280x1024 with black bars 🙂
