My computer just beeps and won't start

Ok, let me paint the scenario a bit. I'm using a store bought Emachine with an AMD XP 1800+. I'm very new to modding in any form, opened my first computer case only a couple of months ago. Up til now the hardest thing I had ever done was install a new heat sink, so nothing special.

Yesterday I decide it was time to upgrade my processor, figured out I needed a Socket A chip, go to the local computer store and buy the best chip they had for that socket, a Sentron 2800+. Take it home, follow the directions completely by taking out the old chip and heat sink, placing in the new and locking it in, adding Arctic Silver, placing the new heat sink on, and I'm done. Run the computer and it works just fine. However for some reason it doesn't seem like it was running faster. I kick myself for not doing some benchmark tests on the old chip to compare, so I run them on the new chip first. I then open the case up, go through the process again this time reinstalling the old chip, load up the computer. Again, everything works just fine, I run the benchmarks again, confirm that the new chip was indeed running faster. Happy with the result, one last time I go through the process of installing the new chip doing exactly as I had done the last two times. NOW when I start the computer, about a second after I turn it on I get a loud long beep. Lasts about a second, then stops for about 2 seconds, beeps again, etc. Nothing loads up to the monitor, nothing else happens. Everything has power, all the fans are spinning etc.

The problem is that I have no idea what would typically cause the computer to just beep and not start up, and more importantly how to go about fixing it since I'm so new to this. Can anyone help walk me through the steps of figuring out what is going on here?

I don't know what you expect to accomplish by repeatedly removing and installing the CPU 😕 but let's leave that for now, and have you check your heatsink positioning. Look at the third and fourth photos on this page and see if you got it oriented correctly. If the fans remain running, then I'm going to figure you did it correctly, but it never hurts to check 🙂

Next, press firmly on your video card and your memory modules and look visually to ensure they're fully seated in their slots.

Also, an off-the-shelf computer isn't something that you necessarily should chuck a new-to-the-market processor into offhand like that. The power supply might not be able to handle it, for one thing, and/or it might need a BIOS update. I think you might be a candidate for building your own rig 😎 If you're interested in that, then jpeyton has made it pretty easy by putting together recommended parts kits in this thread.

Hope that helps 🙂

Well, I wasn't planning on swapping the CPU's back and forth like that, I just did it because it didn't feel like anything had upgraded so I just wanted to run a couple of speed tests on both chips.

The heatsinks are properly installed, everything is pushed in properly. Besides, if anything like the video card or a memory module weren't pushed in properly the computer would still run wouldn't it? Also, I forgot to mention this, but even now when I install the original chip that came with the computer I still have the same problem. Just beeps and nothing happens.

The new chip worked originally, but now neither of them work. The fact that the computer just beeps and won't start up scares me into thinking that I really screwed something up but I don't know how to go about figuring it out.

The computer will not run with the memory or video card improperly seated. It will take you all of ten seconds to check this, so go for it 🙂

If that doesn't fix the problem, double-check that all your cables, such as your ATX12V cable, are still plugged in, just in case you unplugged something to get more room to work in there.

If that doesn't fix it, then replace your 1800+ and...
  1. unplug the computer
  2. remove its CMOS battery (its what? 😕)
  3. find the jumper that clears the CMOS (usually right next to the battery) and move it to the Clear position for about 15 seconds
  4. move the jumper back
  5. replace the battery
  6. plug in the computer
  7. threaten it with violence (they fear water and high-voltage electric shocks  )
  8. fire it up and see if you've got it going again
Good luck! 🙂 Worst-case scenario, it's nothing money can't fix 😀

In some cases, teh yeahs it is necessary. My K8N-E Deluxe, for example.
