Long ago I had an 18 gig maxtor drive running win98 and redhat linux. It was good. One day I popped in a 40 gig maxtor, hooked it up to the Abit BE6 rev2's onboard ata66/100 controller and installed win2k and redhat. All was not well anymore.

I experience frequent lockups out of the blue where the mouse cursor disappears. The computer continues to play mp3s and the keyboard numlock keys function, but I cannot get to the task manager or anything, I must reboot. Okay that was a pain, but livable.

Also when I play counterstrike every once in a while I get a stop error 0x0000001E for nv4_disp.dll The latest detanator drivers from nvidia did nothing.

Now I've noticed that after I press the reset switch frequently I'm greeted with "BIOS ROM Checksum error" That scared the hell out of me. I notice though that I turn the power off and power back on again, it boots fine. I figure this is about where I need to do something.

I'm swapped out all my ran, run the cpu at default speeds and voltages, what else should I try on this thing?
Thanks guy :)

MS PS2 intellimouse, just basic 2 buttons and a wheel, and yup I've set bios back to all default pre-tweaked status

Everything was fine under 98, it was just when I put in the new HD and 2k that things started getting weird.

Something else I notice that is weird is that I have my old 18 gig drive plugged into the onboard ata33 controller. I have all pwoer management functions turned off in the bios and in windows. I from time to time hear that hard drive spin up though, even when I'm not sitting at the computer. I have no idea why windows is pwoering down that drive and then powering it on seemingly randomly since I'm running no servers or anything

Yup brand new, right out of the box, switched it with anothr one just to be sure.

Win98 is cool and all, but I do sorta like fat32, the added stabillity of 2k and the better tcp/ip stack.

checksum error eh? well, when a comp boots up, it goes through a series of checks, but something obviously is wrong. your cpu may be dying, or something isn't seated properly

I believe it was like a bios checksum error, first thing I've done is make a bios restore disk, thats one thing abits have going for them :)
