My computer is dead

I really need some help.

Last night I slept at a friends house and I came home to find my computer totally dead. I always leave my computer running because I have downloads constantly going. The computer will not even turn on There are three lights on the motherboard - orange, green, and red. The orange light turns on when I turn the power on, but when I click the button which turns on the computer, the red and green lights flash on for a second. Sometimes, the fan for the mobo and my cpu will spin for a millisecond.

My first thought was that there was a short or that my CPU was dead.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Do a basic troubleshoot 1. unplug it and clear the CMOS-try to boot 2. Try to boot barebones -just RAM, CPU, vid card. 3. If possible test components in another system, maybe your friend's? Try shorting the power switch pins with a screwdriver in case the case switch is bad or just connect the reset switch to the power pins and try it.

Okay, I removed the CMOS jumper and the same thing (flashing lights) happened when I tried to boot. When I put the jumper on the opposite prongs that it was originall on the orange light would be on but the other lights wouldn't flash.

I tried booting with just mobo, CPU and ram and it didn't work.

First off, tell everyone what mobo and everything else you have. Light codes mean nothing without knowing this. Your manual should tell you what these codes mean.

I have an ABit KR7A motherboard and a XP 1800+ CPU. My video card is the Radeon 8500 and my RAM is Kingston 256 MB DDR PC2100. My case is pretty cheap and made of metal which caused me to have to put some electrical tape on it when I first built my computer to prevent shorts. My power supply is a 300V Enhance

The manual doesn't say anything about what the lights mean...

I could really use some help please. I'm sure some of you out there have good ideas... You always seem to.

You tried booting with the motherboard outside of the case? Put it on something non-conductive like a wooden table.

What I did was stuck a couple newspaper sheets under the motherboard resting on the case. I really can't move the motherboard out because of the short power and LED and power supply cords its connected to. I suppose I could remove all the cords (Reset, Power, etc.) and just leave the power supply connected. Should I or is newspaper a ground?

Newspaper should be fine(cardboard is even better),make sure you have nothing exposed underneath ie plenty of newspaper covering all of the bottom for protection.

I removed eveything except the power supply connection. I removed all the little switches with +D, -D, +5v, -5v, Ground, etc... Is that bad?

When you try booting barebones out of the case just use a screwdriver to short the power pins to see if it'll boot, and just the ATX power cable need be attached to the board.
