My Computer goes nuts after removing hardware

I temporary installed a second harddrive so I can copy some files over.

After I removed the harddrive and restarted windows, if I open up My Computer or Explorer I will get the searching flashlight. If I am lucky this will only go on for a minute and then My Computer finally pops up. Shutting down or restarting doesn't change anything, problem still occurs.

Even tried the Scan for hardware Changes in Device Manager which didn't do anything. Problem eventually went away... until I swapped out a 2nd CDROM for a DVD burner. Problem came back, on start up if I click on My Computer or open Explorer, the searching flash light comes up.

What gives? I am running Windows XP MCE SP2.

Its like Windows isn't seeing the hardware changes on startup and MyComputer searches for the removed drive? Or anytime a change is made to MyComputer screen i.e. removing hardware or a item is removed.

This probably isn't it, but are you disabling/enabling the devices in your bios as appropriate?
