My Computer - can't kill unnamed folder

I'm running Win98 1st ed., and in My Computer there's an unnamed folder that I can't get rid of or move elsewhere.

The folder doesn't seem to do anything, but I try 'cut' I can't paste it anywhere, and when I hit 'delete' nothing happens. If I try to create a shortcut for it, Win98 says it can't do that in My Computer and then asks if I instead want the shortcut on the Desktop. I answer yes, but then it says it can't create the shortcut and suggests that my disk is full (C: is 80% empty).

I've already reinstalled Win98 a couple of times, but the unnamed folder sticks around.

With reinstalling Windows, do you mean formatting the HD? Formatting would be one option. The other option is using ScanDisk. If you're lucky, SD will find a damaged file/folder/error on the C: drive and will repair it.

I played this game with Win95 for about a year. Microsoft Tech Support finally gave up on it. The problem is a corrupt entry deep in the registry. The only known cure is Format C: and reinstall.

I would mount that partition with linux and delete/rename/"move" as wanted. I've had similar problems, you dont even need to install anything just make 2 floppy disks, boot and root.

I don't know if this helps or not, but if you are in DOS (real DOS, not windowed) and you use ALT+255 (actually I think anything between 250 and 255 will do it) in naming a file or a directory, it will exist and windows will see it, but it won't be able to access it. It could be something funny like this...my suggestion is to try deleting it from DOS (again, real DOS)...if it doesn't show up there then maybe it's a registry problem as has been previously suggested.

You could also try regclean, also I keep a floppy around with the old dosshell program in it, it works good and gives you a good shell for DOS. I used to use it to get rid of temp files and system files windows wouldn't let me delete.

I second what Sir Fredrick says, try to delete it from DOS. It is very possible that the folder was created using a non-printable ASCII character of some kind.
