As in will i kill my HD's or mess anything up putting it within close proximity of an unshielded sub? i know older computers' would have died, but are we okay now?

This has come up many times before.

You should be fine. The magnetic fields put out by subwoofers aren't enough to do any damage to harddrives etc.

Unless you're physically shaking things loose, there's not much of an issue.

Yeah, generally you'll be fine. I have enough bass to make me feel uneasy after a few minutes and that doesn't damage the computer or anything so you'll be fine.

does it matter where you put the sub? i thought subs produced omnidirectional sound (directionless sound~?) so it just doesnt matter too much about placement

Yeah, it can make a pretty substantial difference in the way it sounds.

the biggest part about proper sub placement is distance from walls....but i've got it under my desk at the moment since i don't exactly have a lot of real-estate here in my room.

For a while, I had my HT (unshielded) sub on the bottom most shelf of my AV rack right next to my HTPC (no where else to put it till i re-arranged my room). The PC was fine, other then the cheap PSUs molex connectors vibrating out of the HDs. :D
