My completely unscientific thoughts on driving with cell phones.

I'm tired of hearing about how awful it is to drive while using a cell phone. I don't think they're any better or worse than eating/applying makeup/shaving. When I look look at the guy who randomly veered across two lanes for no reason, he's almost always distracted by something. The reason that cell phones end up being worse than other "traditional" distractions is that they take up more of the drivers milage. Eating/applying makeup only happens for periods of about 5 minutes while cell phone conversations happen for the entire trip. They should all be banned from the car.

In my (completely unscientific) survey of stupid ass drivers, I've found that people with kids in the car are the most likely to do stupid unexpected ****** in the car. I seem to notice way more people that look like they are yelling at the kids in the car than any other group. When will we get a study on how two year-olds affect your driving?

you ever tied to watch a tv show while talking on the phone? It don't work out...

Now, put yourself in charge of 2.5tonnes of SUV. Bad idea imho 😉

using a cell phone is dangerous because you have to think about stuff you're talking about, which distracts you from thinking about the road.

the same applies to talking to passengers while driving--it's the reason bus drivers have that sign about talking to the bus driver.

What sign? 😕

All of the bus drivers I know around here (and I know a lot of them) talk to their passengers during the entire route, and when they aren't doing that, they are using their radio to talk to other drivers.

You're full of crap. Talking to passengers is considered a hazard by DOT. Check this document for PTSI 2005-54

I don't think the act of talking on the phone is anywhere near as dangerous as fumbling for it out of your purse as it rings, or trying to dial on it. That's when I see people do the truely stupid sh!t.

But that's no different than watching somebody turn around and backhand their kids while driving or the people that insist on turing their head away from the road while they talk to somebody sitting in th passenger seat.

Cell phones are such a huge topic because it's so readily apparent. People can SEE other people on the cell phone.

You can't as readily see someone eating, or changing the radio station, or talking to passangers. But it's VERY easy to see someone with a cell phone held to their ear.

IMO, cell phones are no worse than any other distraction. People are only so up in arms over them because it's so obvious.

I have enough trouble changing the damn radio station... I couldn't possibly talk on a cell phone and drive.

People talk on their cell phones more often then they eat/do make up etc. Cell phones is probably the single greatest distraction while in a car.

The worst is the people you see text messaging. They should have their licenses revoked.

I'm sure they're doing that because they can hide the phone in their lap...

Like hell I am. It doesn't surprise me at all that it is considered a hazard, but I also cannot think of a single driver that does not do it *all the time*.

If you're an inspector, I have 6 school districts (entire fleets) to report. 😉
