How frequent are these raises? I'm trying to see what I can expect at other firms as I have had very little raises.. like once a year if anything. What industry are you in?

I've gotten 3 raises and 2 promotions in 3 years; entertainment industry. Market is really good for that industry right now.

maybe you can afford a house at some point instead of throwing your cash in the trash every month renting. ;)

Nah it's cool, I enjoy my 15 minute commute to work and $10/month in transportation costs. A house that would meet those same requirements is 600k at a minimum in this current market, and I sure as fuck aint buying a townhouse or condo.

Big raise = you were very underpaid until today

I'm always shocked by companies giving unscheduled raises without being asked for them though. Letting people who don't know what they're worth keep earning less than they could earn is easy. As a business, all you have to do is never reevaluate their pay unless they ask for a raise and it always works out for you. Actively looking at employees and proactively giving them raises seems incredibly magnanimous and a sign that a company is trying to do right by their employees IMO.

Companies seldom do stuff "for employees". Proactively raising benefits keeps people working hard, and lessens the chance of losing a valuable investment. Like replacing the roof on your house *before* it leaks water.

Must be nice, congrats.

The last 5 years for me has been getting a job, getting raises, then getting laid off.

I understand why they do it, but giving valuable employees raises when they ask for them seems "good enough" to keep people working there. After all, it's easier to ask for a raise at your current place of employment than it is to get a new higher paying job elsewhere. I would expect asking for a raise to always be the first move before an employee begins to look for other places to work. Proactively giving raises runs the risk of giving people who are perfectly satisfied with their wages a raise, and it doesn't seem to offer much benefit over simply giving them what they want when they ask for it. It surprises me that companies do it.
