My Company is looking for a Linux Systems Analyst

If you know of anyone that has Linux experience and is looking for a job feel free to PM and I'll provide you with an email address where you can send a resume. First off this is going to be in the academic field (located in the University of Pittsburgh campus) and the pay is not that high. Requirements are bachelors degree and preferably some experience in the medical field, but in-depth Linux experience is needed. Software that would be used is for neuroimaging and the people you would support are going to be looking at some fairly hefty brain slice image files.

Here's the run down:

Position: Systems Programmer/Analyst II (only programming might be some basic scripts etc)
Minimum salary: $16.38/hr, medium: $22.22, max: $28/hr -- my experience is that they usually start people off near the minimum so I'd guess around $17 - $18 /hr.
Position Info: Linux system administration (Redhat Enterprise), backup, restores etc for the Neuroimaging center, application support. Basically maintaing the linux workstations and perhaps a linux server.

Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k match of 3%, savings plan of 3.5% (more after certain age/yrs with company) your salary after you've worked 1000 hrs, approx 22.6 days of paid time off per year & can sell 40hrs per year, 7 paid holidays, FSA plan, tuition reimbursement, surrounded by college girls (or guys -- not that theres anything wrong with that).

--------------

Again, this is in the academic area so pay is not that high (don't flame me, I don't set the salaries). But since it is in the academic field the job is going to be fairly laid back. After you've worked in this department for one year you are eligible to transfer to any other where the pay can be much higher (i.e. clinical etc). But like I said this department has a very relaxed atmosphere and is probbably the easiest most stress free tech job you'll ever find.

You forgot to mention it's in walking distance of the Dirty O, which is a definite plus! 🙂

You want a Linux admin to have experience in the medical field? 😕

By the way, not every linux admin out there has a bachelors degree. I know some damn good admins who don't.

Good Experience > Degrees anyday.

Medical experience isn't necessary, more of a bonus really. Obviously if you have two qualified candidates and one has linux experience in a hospital environment then that guy is going to get the job.

As far as a degree goes that's usually one of the things they're looking for in the academic field. Now if they can't find anyone properly qualified with a degree then they'd obviously pick the guy with the experience. But most (if not all) people embellish their experience to some degree...

So basically I'd say that if you think you're qualified to support 20 - 30 linux workstations and a server then send your resume in.

that's pretty sad. Whatever happened to honest folks?

In any case, good luck with your search.

I've already got my own hands full doing linux admin (along with bunch of other stuff) 😉

ps: and I also don't have a bachelor degree. Doesn't stop me from doing my job 😀

I have medical exp and lots of linux exp. But the high end is still less then I make now. Sounds interesting though. I wish ya luck, but its going to be hard to get a lot of linux exp and medical exp at those rates (we just went though a ton of linux guys trying to find somoene to work at that range.)

Yeah it is supposed to be fairly interesting work that they're doing. The main requirement for the job is just someone who knows linux fairly well. Exposure to the medical field would just be a bonus -- it would probably just help whoever is hired to better understand what type of work the group is doing.

At this point I would say that anyone with a linux cert or two, or even just a couple of years of work experience with linux would be qualified for the job. And to sweeten the pot I'll throw in a case of beer! 😉

Seconded.

And yeah, if only this was part time and open to Pitt students with enough Linux knowledge to do this job and more. 😛
