My Comp. won't reconize my hardrive?

I have an old P1 100mhz comp. and I installed a new cd-rom. I forgot to set the cd-rom to slave when I booted up. My comp. then gave me a error. So I switched the cd-rom to slave and booted agian. I went into the bios to make sure my hardrive was set to primary master and my cd-rom to primary slave. It wasn't set so I tried to set the hardrive for primary master but my comp. told me there was nothing there (like my hardrive didn't exist). My comp. will reconize my cd-rom but not the hardrive. It always gives me the error "Primary master drive fail." Mabey my hardrive broke but I dont even remeber touching it when I installed the cd-rom. I've been through the mobo manual and checked all the bios setting. I just have no idea whats wrong, it was working before I installed a new cd-rom.😕

Anyone have any ideas?
