My comp takes an hour to start

No joke, the problem started when I replace my pc2100 128mb RAM with pc2700 256 RAM. At first nothing was wrong, but after a couple of days, the computer barely worked at all. It was so slow. I talked to dell, and all I got was that I might have spywares issues. I've taken out the pc2700 RAM and placed the 2100 back. But the problem persists. Can anyone tell me if it is a hardware problem or software? Would reformatting my harddrive help?

Have you done a virus scan or checked for spyware? Ad-Aware from Lavasoft is decent and so is SpyBot. If you don't have a virus scanner you can run an on line test with Trend Micro's Housecall. Also install AVG from grisoft.com. It's free and it works. How's the POST? Does it post as it always did and then slow down when the OS starts to load? Reformatting should help if you have a software problem, but that would be like using a hammer to kill a fly if it's something simple. I would suggest that you take a few notes on exactly what it's loading up and what's running and let us know. What CPU do you have?

I think you should try to get rid of any spyware or viruses you have, if that doesn't work, try formatting. Im thinking its software, not hardware. Unless your HD is acting up.

It could be a number of things. Once it finally boots up, how does the computer run? How long does it take booting into safemode, and how does it run there?

u might want to go to blackviper.com and check out his xp service guide .........you can safely remove services you dont need.

Another possible cause is a pending hard drive failure. Happened to one of my machines at work. As more and more sectors on the drive apparently began failing, the drive spent more and more time attempting to re-read them. The problem was exacerbated by the fact that my swap file was on the same drive. End result was the system, while technically "running" had screeched to a halt. 5 minutes to open a new command prompt. A few days later the whole drive failed.

sounds like your HDD is dieing, run some HDD utilities, spyware and viruses will cause it to slow down but to to the point where it takes an hour
