my comp seems to crash and freeze onXP

is there any file that logs the reasons for crashing..last night my computer crashed and restarted and I woke up to find that the system had frozen after it had restarted. No programs except for the basic ones (Windows, Norton) were running..why would a computer freeze with no real programs running?
