My comp is too loud..

hey, i have a pretty noisy pc, and my cpu isnt that cool either (idle 45Cish). I have my x800 fan, my stock amd HS, and 2 antec 80mm case fans that came with the case (as well as my psu fan i suppose, but i cant actually feel the air coming out of it, must be low rpm so irrelevent i guess) I would like a pc i can leave on overnight (its in my room) without it's noise annoying me. But i have a budget of £40 ($70?)

What would, given a low budget of $70, be the most effective solutions? Or should i just save up for a long time for a prommie/vapochill (are they silent?)

Ta.

I'd get a Zalman 7000 or a thermalright with a good yate loon fan. Also, you may want to get 2 120mm fans. A phase-change cooling system is way to expensive, unless you want to overclock your cpu by a lot.(FX-55_2.6->4.0 or P4 670_3.8->5.2) Here's my list for u:
Zalman 7000- $29.99

Antec 120mm fan-$11.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835129030
Antec 120mm fan-$11.99
Also, a zalman F700 graphics card cooler may quiet/cool your pc. ($25.99)

Total=$79.96

A little pricey, but ur comp will be dead quiet and very cold.

i replaced my stock P4 HSF with a Zalman AlCu and that reduced my PC noise about 75% - seriously. Also, if your PSU has a fan controller, use it!

Wait a minute...22dba and 39 cfm for the 120mm. I wish there was such a fan as you spec'd out. I'd be all over it! 🙂 OP I have a xp120 on my 3500+ Win on an A8V mobo. Fan atop is a cooler master 120mm @ 1200 rpm very quiet and cools great. This would probably not be "in your $70 budget" though. You could keep your 80mm antec fans and get a fan controller or if your 80's are connected to your mobo you can use Speedfan (free dnld) and control your fans rpms. 120mm's are definitely the way to go to get quieter IMO. Lower rpms, but still good cfms.

You should definately be able to feel air coming out of the PSU. 45C idle tells me something is wrong, not just inefficient.

It could be his house is hot combined with inefficiency, but I do suspect that something isn't kosher. Possibly the thermal grease dried up. In that case, buy some AS5

theres only so much one can do with that type of antec case for silence. i have two i know. they are very full of holes and such for cooling. good for cooling, bad for noise. that and the harddrives arent mounted on rubber grommets or anything. fans aren'[t on rubber either. one can use a fan controller and lower rpms of te 80mm, but theres only so much one can do with 80mm, they are loud and don't pull much air. one can either get a sonata type case.. i'm sure theres a larger antec version with the same features. or get water cooling..which costs much more.

1. 7 volt the two rear antec 80mm fans

2. Set motherboard to modulate CPU fan with temperature control at 55C

3. let me know how that sounds

4. profit

Hmm, I was thinking ATISilencer, Zalman 7000, undervolt some case fans. The two coolers together are about 70 dollars.

The video card and case fans are probably the loud ones. I'd start with the video card first, then move from there. A completely silent case is almost impossible, 3 months ago I replaced my case fans and video card HS/fan(went with zallman fanless) and now, it seems loud again because I became accustomed to the new, low noise.

impossible yes, but starting off with a very loud case you are just throwing good moneya fter bad if u want silence. i've tried. you will spend money on fan controllers, new fans, dampening etc..and a sonata type design will still be quieter at stock config.

heh, thanks for the suggestions then guys, but i guess im stuck with a noisy case until my next build whenever that may be 😛. The case fans use psu molex connectors, cannot plug to mobo to undervolt... And there is not room in the fan holes for 120mm. I somewhat resolved my cpu temp though, i now idle at 38C, rather than around 47C, as i cleaned heatsink, reapplied AS5, and updated my bios to allow me to use 1.52volts rather than 1.575volts.

yea, no place for 120mm. and the fan mounts are those plastic screw free things right? easy to use. but doesn't allow u to use those aftermarket rubber fan grommet or gasket things

I put the big 120mm Zalman on my CPU, cut a 120mm hole in the top of the case, and installed a 120v AC rack fan there with it's own AC pigtail. Then I bough a rotary AC fan controller from Home Depot for $8 and mounted it through the top of the case next to the fan. Just for fun, I added a little neon indicator light right next to the fan controller.

Turned full on, this fan will stand your hair straight up if you're looking down on it, but at night you can dial it all the way down to "fairly quiet." I leave this fan at the lowest setting 24x7, even when the computer is off. I can hardly hear it, but it works to exhaust residual hot air immediately after shutting down, when all the other fans stop dead. When I am rendering video, I crank it up. This fan has been running for about two years. I have no idea how long they last, but I know that they are a lot more robust than cheap 12v case fans. When it dies (IF it dies before I do), I'll just spend $20 for another one.

I'd like to do water or refrigeration at some point, but not because I find air too noisy...I would just like to try it.

Works for me.

they have fan controllers that go from 0-12v like this but i'm sure you can find cheaper.

i use the nexus 3.5" but its minimum is 6v i think.

Now that you've re-applied the AS5 you may not want or need a new CPU cooler. However, if you want you can get a Thermalright XP-90 ($24.95) plus the optional Panaflo L1BX 92mm fan with it ($7.00 if ordered with XP-90) from JabTech. I got the same cobo several month ago (and paid more). Works great and is whisper quiet. Can't heat the Panaflo above the rear 120mm case fan. Heres a link to the proper page for the XP-90 and Panaflo fan options (in drop-down menu):

If you really want to cool your video card and the case down at the same tiem I'd recommend an Arctic Cooling Silencer for your X800. I've got one and it works great, cooling my X800 XT PE and venting the heat drawn off of the GPU to the outside of the case. No other videocard cooling solution does this. The Silencer is also dead quiet. You cannot hear the fan at all, even at full-tilt when gaming online with your head at the front of the PC case. I highly recommend it.

Two things I want to mention about the Silencer. My brother had one on his Visiontek Xtasy X800 XT (non-PE, not that it matters) and the fan started "clicking" after about a month. This continued for a couple of days, then it stopped. It may have been caused by the PWM (pulse-width modulation) fan control on the Silencer. Strange that it went away after two days. Whatever.

Second thing is that I have seen several posts from different users of both the ATI and Nvidia versions of the Silencers where the fan died or made a "grinding sound". The Silencers use a ceramic bearing which is usually considered to be very durable as well as quiet, combining the durability of a ball bearing with the quietness of a sleeve bearing.

At any rate, the ATI Silencers carry a 6-year warranty, which will most likely outlast the
your X800's service in your PC (although it would be a pain to have to re-install your stock HSF while obtaining warranty service on your Silencer. Although you would have the same issues if your stock HSF died anyway).

BTW, knock-on-wood, I've been using an ATI 4 Silencer (OEM on my HIS Excalibur IceQ II X800 XT PE) since August 2004 without any problem whatsoever. Cools great, but maybe too great, as the heat exhausted out of the case and into my office makes it so I have to turn on my AC when gaming for long periods. No need to turn the heater on during the winter!

Hers a link to the ATI Silencers on the Arctic Cooling web site:

Go to www.silenx.com they have the best fans/cpu coolers in my opinion, im running 5 9cm's, 600w silenx psu and their 12cm fan cpu cooler and its so quiet its not funny compared to my old computer.
Thats a tad more expensive than $70 though.
cheers

If you are really serious about quieting your computer, Anandtech is not the place to ask questions. Some of the replies in this thread are accurate, some are mis-leading, some are flat laughable.

Why not try a website that specializes in quiet computing, such as SPCR.

Personally, I love this CPU cooler:
Super Copper Fun">http://www.tankguys.com/cnps7700cu-sockets-p-78480.html</a>

I use it on my PC. It's great, and really quiet.

The downside is that it doesn't fit too well on some motherboards... it's pretty huge. It's worth a look though.
