My college wants me to take intro to computing; I'm a system administrator.

..... I want to get an exception made because this class is a joke, who should I talk to at college? I wouldn't mind taking it if they paid for it and it didn't force me to stay another semester to finish my degree.

The first year out of highschool I was forced to take an "Intro to computer applications and concepts" where I had to school the professor and show him how he was wrong for marking my answer wrong. And how what he was teaching wasn't right; he told me to prove it so I did on his projector in front of the entire class. Then I told him try it your way.

You guessed it, his way didn't work. Regardless I still didn't get my 2 points.

Talk to your adviser, but you can't fight city hall. Unless they have something in place that says X Y or Z will meet the requirements for the Intro class there's no way around it. If that's the case then see if you can take it online so you can still get on with your life while you tie off that loose end, otherwise you're stuck on campus for another semester. It's probably a basic C++ (or similar) class so if you already know programming just enroll, never go to class, turn in all the homework and tests, pass, and get on with your life. You can still get hired if you're up front about having to finish up some required classes.

Speak with the professor about your situation, I was able to do an independent study for different professors when I was in university on a few occasions where the subject matter was remedial to me but it was required for graduation.

You need to approach it properly though, if you go in there all swinging dick talking about how you're too good for this, etc, you're not going to get very far.

This. If you have to pay for the credits anyway you might see if you can turn the requirement into something valuable for yourself.

What should I say? Independent study sounds good, I could work on other IT things, these intro to computing courses irritate me, I don't think anyone should be forced to take them yet almost all students are.

It urks the crap out of me that all of the professors teaching these courses are less enthusiastic than robots. Almost like a zombie.

However for an independent study wouldn't I still be paying for a class I don't need at all. And all the students cheat on anyway.

you say you hate these cources and are annoyed that all students have to take them but as someone who has been working for 10 years you would not believe the number of new hires we have who have NO FUCKING IDEA HOW A COMPUTER WORKS!

Ignoring the requirement of the class itself, do you have enough credits to graduate?

Yes, I want to be done by the end of summer and I'd rather take cell biology or analytric calc in the summer than ..... intro to computing.

Perhaps I should Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer.

Buy the ticket, take the ride. In other words, it's a known quantity of the game you're currently playing, you might as well get something out of it.

I would approach the professor in email (or in person ideally if that isn't contrived) and ask if it's possible to work on an independent project or study in their field instead of taking the actual class content. It's worth a shot. Worst case, they say no and you phone it in and get an easy A, use the time to teach yourself something useful anyway.

Yes this is what I tell all my friends who talk about "certs" and then they'll know everything. No. Just no.

Dress up like that guy from Rocky Horror Picture Show and sit on the professors lap. Inform him you don't need to take his intro to computing class. With any luck he will agree.

If they make an exception for you, they'll be making an exception for everyone who thinks they know computer. Maybe have the professor give you an exam and if you passed it then you dont have to take the class but you'll get credit for it.

I've been in IT for over 10yrs (5 of that as an engineer) and worked with so many so-called IT people who are as clueless as your typical teenager when it comes to computer.

Every college has a waiver process. It's probably in the student handbook, or if you have a department office, you can ask the person at the front desk.

not in IT but we get both ends of the spectrum here, the people who don't know shit about anything and the people who need to take a step back from tech,

the 2nd group are the ones that get pissed off at corp America when they realize we are stuck in the past decade, your work comp is prob a hand-me down from Dell or HP, you have to use IE and your USB ports may well be disabled

also get used to that 19" monitor because that's all you get

I hope you have low standards, or you'll be setting yourself up for disappointment.

I dont know how much has changed, but intro csc was one of the options of bredth requirement for arts students.

my group are those people who still utilize logon scripting, and are so out of touch with technology that it's scary. I don't blame them really, they're about 20-30yr older than I am and are pretty much set in their archaic ways. A sysad we interviewed last year hadnt done anything with virtualization or any type of automation process. No esx experience. This should be a base requirement for ANYONE who's looking beyond helpdesk as a profession.
