I got high when I was 15, I didn't care about high school let alone college, I didn?t go home for weeks on end, and basically I was just living in the moment. These were all factors that led to my transfer to military school in Virginia during my junior year of high school. I arrived at military school with a negative attitude about the whole idea, showing no emotion not trying to make friends with anyone just keeping to myself and trying to get by everyday, actually counting days off on a calendar made by hand.
I soon learned it was useless trying to fight the situation because I obviously wasn?t going home, so I figured I?d make the best out of the situation. I did things I would normally never have done if I were at home like doing about 50 push-ups every night before ?lights out? (bedtime), working out in the school exercise room and even playing organized basketball as an after school sport.
Being part of the ?rat? unit, a group that all the new students were put in, built up a lot of dedication, hard work, loyalty and unity within myself. All rats were subjected to a worse treatment than normal students for approximately 6 weeks and at the end of 6 weeks a ?break out? occurred. During the break out strenuous physical exercise was put upon us, including a 3 AM 4 mile long march. After the march, more physical activities including crawling through sand, push-ups in mud, running up and down stairs and more were done. The break out was to finally end with a climb up ?rat hill?, an extremely wet and cold hill covered in mud and all sorts of junk the senior class decided to throw in there. The day wasn?t going to be over until all of my ?rat buddies? made it up the hill, which took an hour or two and even in the cold weather the previous weeks of training had taught me and my fellow rat brothers to use everything possible, including taking off our t-shirts in freezing weather to create a chain and hoist one last person up the hill.
Military school helped me in great ways; it shaped me to be who I am today, which is a lot more mature than the person who was around before January of 2003. The school term before I transferred was dismal to say the least; I had over 14 absences in one class (18 is the limit ?till you lose credit) and a number more in all my other periods. After spending only 5 months at military school, I came back to my normal high school and when my first report card showed up with 2 absences being the most in any class, it had hit me that even though I cursed military school and my parents for sending me there it sure has hell had done something for me.
Not only has it helped me school-wise, but also in the professional field I feel more relaxed and ready to go. The regimented work schedule in Virginia helped me become more structured and organized, pre-military school me would have been extremely unsure about agreeing to work for NJ Cure Auto Insurance because of the monotonous schedule, but I took it head on and currently work Monday through Thursday every week and go to school each of those days as well. A boring and simple schedule which I follow everyday; wake up, school, work, dinner, homework and finally sleep. Pretty much everyday of the week, a schedule that most people would not be able to handle but I don?t mind doing because I was more than prepared to handle it.
Most people like to say that I?m always thinking one step ahead of everybody and how to benefit from the things that I love, and perhaps that is true because when most kids were into the Pokemon fad; trading cards, collecting toys and what not I was creating a website that grew to be one of the most popular for the cartoon on the internet. A friend and I popularized the website by creating discussion boards, up-to-date news, games and all sorts of interesting scripts, it was enough to be recognized by a major international gaming company, that was based in Sweden, known as MGON (Media and Games Online International). They took us under their wing and we became part of a large network and soon enough I rose to position of a General Manager, taking over a few sites on the network and actually earning a steady salary each month at the age of 15 to 16. Managing websites that received an average of over 7000 page views a day and balancing school was not as easy as it seemed, it tested me at times but I got through it and still figured out a way to take care of a popular website that many people ?depended? on, and do my best in school.
Leadership, patience, a strong work ethic and a lot more characteristics have been developed within me, thanks to the various and rare experiences that I have been through as a child and teenager, and with these characteristics I think I could contribute a lot to the (UNIVERSITY)? community; I am a very open-minded person and can talk with many different people and many different levels. I would love to share my experience and knowledge of the Internet world, the military world and of course the Eastern part of the world with all the other people with different ethnic backgrounds at (UNIVERSITY). Learning about all the other different cultures would be just as fulfilling as teaching people about the different experiences that I have been through.
I believe I would benefit greatly from the people and the environment that surrounded me. Being from a rich ethical background I feel that it would be easy to join the community and a blessing to be a part of it.
