My city wants voters to aprove a 2 cent tax on text messaging.

Are other parts of the country doing this?

The city will ask voters to aprove of the tax, if if aproved all cell operators must collect it or face heavy fines.

Why don't you just suggest to them that they get jobs to earn some money instead of stealing it any silly way they can dream up. If the idiots running things actually had to earn the money they spend things would be COMPLETELY different.

First off shens, second all this will do is make the big cell provides not sell phones to people with billing address in your town. The overhead of adding that to the billing system > profit from your town.

It's kinda like some promotional contests are excluded from certain states due to their legislature.

Haha, I was about to ask what bassackward town would implement this stupid policy, only to find out its the city I live in!

Sac is desperate for money though, they're losing a ton on decreasing property values and development costs. Of course in standard government fashion, instead of cut costs, they try and soak the citziens.

"Second, taxes on old technology, such as regular telephones, are generating less revenue."

WTF? They're already making up for it by charging taxes for cellphone service.

Since only old people vote, while everybody else is too busy with their own little world to give a fuck, your city will definitely pass the txt msg tax. Grats.

Good luck on getting that passed. The big telcos which provide the cell service have enough money to buy the entire city out so I don't see that passing at all. Not to mention, if it ever had a chance of passing, they'd just stop selling service for that city. Telcos don't like losing money, to anyone.

Hell, I'd vote for it if I lived in Sacramento. (glad I don't though)

I don't text at all, in fact, I have texting disabled on my phone.

It's easy to vote for a tax that doesn't cost you anything...just like all the non-smokers who vote to tax cigarettes...

Repeal Prop. 13.

Fuck that. Modify it if you want so that businesses are no longer covered by it, (something that's already being discussed) but I don't think the people in Kahleeforneeya will ever repeal Prop 13 for residencial.

I don't see how they would enforce this.

A text message is just sending data over private network, the government can go fly a kite. Maybe they want to tax me 2 cents every time I drag and drop a word doc to my network share. Same concept.

if you look at places example beverly hills near the hills twords brentwood/bell air.

the average house starts at 8-10 million dollars.

i can think of a lot of states that would buy you acres and not sqr feet with that kind of money.

😛

infact i went to a 50 million dollar house in bevery hills last year for a dinner party. I left the place speachless.

how can they enforce it? same way they enforce anything. The phone company would have to record/report all text messages sent, and pay the taxes...

text messaging already costs more per meg than it costs to communicate with the hubble space telescope which is a nice 366 miles up in the sky.

It's a stupid law for a stupid activity. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

IT'S A PHONE. PHONES ARE USED TO TALK TO PEOPLE. TEXT MESSAGING TAKES MORE TIME THAN CALLING THE PERSON AND LEAVING A DAMN MESSAGE!

Dumbest comment I have read so far today (7:33AM Eastern)

I don't even know how to text message on my cell phone. I don't know how to check for messages. All I know how to do is press numbers and click send in order to make a phone call. I struggle to turn it off and to turn it on - all because I've made cell phones the one piece of technology that I absolutely hate for my own reasons & have made a conscious effort to avoid learning how to use them. But even I recognize your statement as being one of the most idiotic things I've read today. Please note: I'm not merely saying that you posted an idiotic statement - if just explained why it's idiotic. If you read what I just typed, you'll realize that I only use a cell phone as a phone and nothing more; the vast vast majority of people use the cell phone in a whole lot of other ways.
