News My City Joins The List For Anti-Muslim Terror Attacks

What I thought was a simple case of DUI causing a tragedy turned into something else. Something very perverted and sick.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around what could possess someone to do this.

🙁

A driver intentionally struck five members of a family while they were walking in northwest London, killing four of them, because of their Islamic faith, the city’s police chief alleges.

Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in the largest mass killing in the city’s history.

“We believe the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith,” London police Chief Steve Williams said during a press conference Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded at 8:40 p.m. Sunday to reports of a vehicle striking pedestrians at Hyde Park and South Carriage roads. A black pickup truck travelling south on Hyde Park Road mounted the curb and struck the family as they were waiting to cross the intersection. The vehicle sped away, heading south before running a red light and turning left on Oxford Street, police said.

A woman, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A man, 46; a woman, 44; and a girl, 15, were taken to the hospital and later died. A nine-year-old boy remains in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The names of the deceased weren’t immediately released at the request of the family.

Williams sought to reassure members of London’s Muslim community, estimated at more than 30,000, that they are safe. “There is no tolerance in this community for individuals motivated by hate.”

The area of the crash is a unique spot – filled with big-box stores and strip malls along the four-lane Hyde Park Road. It’s a bustling shopping node, but with high-density residential neighbourhoods around it. It’s also filled with undeveloped parcels of land. People out for walks or runs are common along the major north-south Hyde Park Road.

The intersection where the crash happened – Hyde Park and South Carriage – is a good example. The intersection includes a popular hardware store with condo towers behind it; townhouses across the road; and some empty plots nearby.

Veltman, who appeared in court Monday afternoon, was arrested Sunday evening in the parking lot at Cherryhill mall, roughly seven kilometres from the scene of the crash.

Veltman was wearing a body-armour-style vest at the time of his arrest, Det. Supt. Paul Waight said.

Veltman doesn’t have any past criminal convictions, though he has had past interactions with other police forces, but nothing of a serious nature, Waight said.

Veltman’s made his first court appearance Monday over a phone line from London police headquarters.

He was asked his name and date of birth. “Nate Veltman, December 20, 2000,” he said.

Justice of the Peace Terry Steenson placed a publication ban on any evidence at the hearing.

The charges were read to him: one count of attempted murder of a youth “by striking him with a motor vehicle, namely a Dodge Ram pickup truck,” and four first-degree murder charges. Three females were unidentified, while a fourth charge was in connection with the death of Syed Afzaal.

Steenson said bail on murder charges can only be sought in the Superior Court of Justice. He ordered Veltman into custody and to return to court on Thursday.

Mental illness, how they were raised... it boggles the mind.

Truly at a loss to have any concept of how people like that view the world, whatever motivates their blind hate, be it race, gender, or other trivial aspects. There are the mentally ill due to chemical imbalances in the brain, but I suspect the majority are the result of their piss poor upbringing.

Very sad. Too bad we don't have a way to bring those who wish to kill Muslims and Muslims who wish to kill non Muslims or other Muslims together alone in one place.

I suspect they hate themselves and want others to feel that pain.

Saw the accident report earlier this morning and just heard about the charges, not shocked, just sad

This whole thing makes me sick. Just a family out walking in the evening. Had people sending it to me and talking about it all day. Then the news was released that it was targeted. It just makes me angry. I’d say it’s not something we expect here but there’s been a few incidences in the past that make this not entirely surprising.

I flash back to a few years ago I was coming out of a truck stop just outside of London and some dickhead looks at me and says can you believe all the immigrants in there. I went up and down both sides of him…. Then later I realized he said it to me because I’m another white guy and he just assumed I would feel the same as him. That pissed me off more than anything. They are out there, many of them out in the open and it doesn’t matter where you go.

Ugh. Just got off the phone with one of my employees who was close friends with the family that was involved. His daughter was the same age as the daughter who passed. Just hearing the fear in him for his family. The fear his kids have expressed to him about even going outside now. I can't even begin to imagine it as I've never experienced it. My heart is just broken here.

It hits hard. Grief combined with fear is the stuff of nightmares.

The driver was 20 years old? Wtf.

That's all too common with racist attacks, unfortunately (see: Dylann Roof). The attackers combine the classic overconfidence and susceptibility of youth with someone's poisonous rhetoric.

I remember Blue Max, who used to be one of our resident islamophobes years ago... he fit that blend of headstrong youth with racism. When the Montreal mosque shooting happened, I was half expecting to find out he was the gunman.

Yeah while Canadian's are nicer people in general, albeit somewhat cold(I'm a Toronto resident) unfortunately the mindset outside of big cities is very backwards.

It's a dirty little secret that some townships in Ontario have a racism problem.

There has been a huge outpouring of sympathy and grief here over the last few days. The perp is one twisted twerp.

The driver arrested in an alleged hate-motivated attack that killed four family members in London laughed as police took him into custody in a mall parking lot, a traumatized taxi driver who witnessed the arrest told his boss.

“Nate is not a radical terrorist. He is nothing like that. He is not an Islamophobe. That’s not who this kid is,” said one friend.

The friend, who hails from the Middle East, said he never heard Veltman say a bad thing about the Middle East or Muslims. “Nate was a very close friend and never said anything bad to me,” the man said.

Another friend said Veltman “never said anything hateful” about any groups.

Sounds less like a hate crime and more like a kid who just snapped. Tragic either way.
