this guy acclaims Rambus as "cutting edge technology" because it used to run at 1066mhz last time he checked, then he asks if anyone knows what it runs at now. I say it's been kinda phased out since about 2002, and he says no way, all the computers in here have rambus! (computers are 3+ year old p4 1.6 wiliamettes with rdram pc800) I sigh quietly, and remain quiet for the class. He makes an assumption that the "new" rambus probably runs at 1.6ghz and continues on. Now I know my stuff when it comes to hardware since I waste my time playing games all day, but I don't know all that much about domains and servers and switches, which is 3/4 what we learn in the class. (other 1/4 is the prof. showing off his knowledge of hardware, arg!) I'm scared that what he's teaching us about switches and such is just as misinformed as his knowledge of hardware. should i just take what he says with a grain of sand or what? what to do... what to do...

Rambus IS cutting edge technology - just that it comes at a cost. That, and the PC's didn't need that kind cutting edge performance at the cost it would have been necessary to implement it. Just look at the upcoming game stations

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, correct him or otherwise make a fool of him in class. If you value your grade, anyway. I had a programming instructor in the Marine Corps who tried to teach a hardware class and knew nothing about it. In my youthful ignorance, I humiliated him in front of everyone because I didn't like that he claimed to know everything and in reality knew nothing. He ended up doing everything in his power to fail me. It didn't work, but it caused me to miss graduating in the top 3 in my class.

If youre concerned with the information he's giving, do a double-check on the net or with a trusted network guy to make sure he's not teaching you a bunch of BS. I know some instructions that teach technical courses that simply peruse the book a week before class starts. They don't have a clue what they're teaching.

Keeping your mouth shut and just chewing on it will be great practice for later on when you're married.

1. Cutting edge was and is right.
2. he thinks people still use it in PCs?
3. 1600MHz RDRAM was a reality, and now XDR is going even faster. However, the PS3 and some kickass servers will be all that really use it for the performance. For the most part...it's cell phones using it for good performance at low power.
4. Take everything with a grain of salt. EVERYTHING. :)

Confronting him will do more bad than good. If you are decided to go all the way, you could win and have the top grade - however, you will have bad reputation with the other teachers (not good for your grades)
