I bought a dfi infinity nf ultraii-m2 which uses a Nforce4 chipset, the thing is that this chipset runs too hot, and i'm afraid something might happen, I already tried contacting DFI, but they won't respond.

so, my question is, what would be the consequences of running the system with chipset temperatures as high as 71°C (which is the regular temperature during the day, and it decreases to 63°C during the night) ?

I usually maintain my computer on all day and all night, but i am not in front of it all the time, that is why i am scared :S

MORE INFO:

No, I think i'll get some AS5 tomorrow, it is hard to get it here, but a friend of mine has some :D

for those who need more info:

ambient temperature during the day: 30°C-38°C (this is not the hottest season though, it gets as high as 50°C during april to june)
ambient temperature during the night: 20°C-27°C

System specs:

DFI INFINITY NF ULTRAII-M2 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ windsor
ATI Radeon x600xt 256MB
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB ddr2 675
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3320620A 320GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard DriveCOOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Black/Silver Aluminum Bezel, SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply
NEC DVD writer

Common usage:

graphic design (photoshop cs2, illustrator cs2, in design, all need to be opened at the same time)
gaming (only CS:S, rarely another)
video enconding (possible usage)

Temperature history:

chipset temp. during the day starting from 12:00 AM to 8:00 PM ---> 64°C to 72°C, depending on the ambient temperature
during night ---> 61°C to 63°C

System temperature

During the day: 43°C to 46°C
during the night: 36°C to 39°C

Case fans: 2
120mm X 1
80mm X 1

Also, I read at newegg reviews (yeah I know, the more you read newegg reviews the dumber you get, still some are helpful) that many users are having the same problem due to the low-quality heatsink of the chipset, but they are not getting these temperatures :S, mine are higher, and I'm worried because I was planning to OC! :S, plus I'm an All-day user, my computer is on like 23:30 hours/day.

Hmm, if you've got some arctic silver 5 and isophoryl (sp?) alcohol lying around trying putting some as5 on there and see what it does. If not, or if it does nothing, look for an aftermarket cooler.

We need alot more infor to help you.......there could be any number of things causing this....if indeed the temps really are too high...

The chipset on this mobo is notorious for running very hot.

But enough about me and me not haveing that problem. ;)

Force it to run at 100%?
Use AS5?

Since you live in a very hot climate, there are a number of aftermarket heatsinks for that motherboard. You might check at dfi-street.com. However, I wouldn't worry too much about the temperatures unless you actually start experiencing instability. If nothing else, cleaning the compound off the heatsink and applying AS5 is probably a good idea.

I just picked up a DFI Ultra-d last week and one of the first things I did was clean off the NF4 chipset, applied some AS, and reattached the stock chipset heatsink and fan. I do have a good bit of case cooling, but my chipset temp idles in the low 40s, and doesn't seem to go over 50C under load.

The NF4 chipsets do run hot - even with the forced air cooling solutions. At least on the LANParty boards, the chipset runs around 50-55deg C., so I'd think the 70's you're seeing is definitely on the high side.

What's the outcome of reseating the cooler?
