My Chemistry teacher is insane

The best is what you'll realize in roughly 3-4 years: HS grades mean absolute sh*t.

It looks like your prof is teaching you basic organic chem. That really shouldn't be all that hard. Count carbons, learn the general form for organic molecules. Now if she's asking you to do dehydrohalogenation on Methyl, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary alcohols, you can start bitching. Sn1...Sn2...E1...E2...fun stuff. All memorizaiton.

You are doing better in High School than I did. I had mostly all APs and Honors, but hated taking the test (test anxiety). I only took them because I would get bored in advanced. The only problem was I would sleep in the AP/Honors classes. I really don't know how I passed some of those classes other than sheer luck because I slept through everything.

Of course, college reamed me for a while since I had absolutely no study skills whatsoever.

My question is why did it take a full semester and a half for you to realize tat there was a problem? Its not like you just started this class NOW, no, you have been in it since last September, and suddenly there is a problem.

Wow, what an ego. You, sir, are retarded. IB is as much bull as any other high school course out there. To try to claim that IB makes anything different would be a lie. The quality of a high school course is extremely dependent on the teachers. I'll bet I've taken more AP and IB crap than the vast majority of high schoolers, and all I have to say after having taken those courses is that a bad teacher can make them just as pointless as any non-honors course.

You know that 4000 word extended essay you wrote? I did mine in 2 weeks, start to finish, because I didn't care to start it until 2 weeks before the deadline. I got the second highest score possible on that thing. You think IB is hard? Get real. Dealing with bad teachers is hard, not IB.

EDIT: To the OP: if the teacher is really bad, administration can do something. I've seen one instance of a teacher being fired because they were so terrible everyone failed the course. But I don't know what the limit is to result in action.

Depends on the school/state. I sat in on a college level chemistry class at the University of Richmond... I was amazed that it was less rigorous than my high school chemistry class. (But, I took AP, got a 5 on the exam).


Question for the OP (and others can consider) --- the OP said he's bad at chemistry, that's why he didn't take AP... how the heck would you know you're bad at chemistry before you took a chemistry course?!

Considering I was told Chemistry was very heavy on math, and I don't excel in Math, it didn't really make sense to take an AP Chem course.

Its basic algebra, some log rules, and maybe some multi equation algebra. Nothing ground breaking really.
 
This reminds me of my IB chemistry teacher.

Boy that class was stupid. He never really taught anything so when the exams came it was like an independent study class lol.

 
I remember two teachers in HS like that. I had an Algebra teacher that pretty much gave what she called "sermons" every day. Nothing to do with the class...just some random thought would pop in her head and off she'd go.
We had Honors Society members that failed her class.

First of all, the only form of difficult chemistry is upper division O-chem at the college level. You are not doing this, therefore you really can't complain.

Does the teacher really never give reading assignments, lectures, or homework on any of the material? How are you getting a D if you've been doing all of the homework? Are the tests really that big of a portion of your grade?

Teachers are NOT there to make sure you understand stuff. High school kids like you think they are, but they aren't. It is not their responsibility. They can't force you to learn the material, but they can be there if you want to learn the material. Having trouble with the homework? Then fvcking ask the teacher about it!!!!

When you get to college you'll finally realize that professors are not there to spoonfeed you the materials of the test so that you can pass the class. They don't care if you pass. I had one physics professor say something really good to me a few months ago (I plan to be a professor some day myself, actually taught an upper division E&M course today for the first 45 minutes and did a pimp job)

(this is paraphrased BTW, I was grading tests for him)
"When I first began teaching, I thought I could reach out to all of the students. To my dismay, some students are just D students, other students are B students, and a few students are A students. That's just how it goes. No matter what you do, the D students are always going to be D students. That's why I no longer teach for the D students; it's unfair to the A and B students. I teach for the B students. The A students can sleep in class or stay at home because they're going to be A students no matter what. I can help the B students and maybe even some of the C students; that's who I want to help. I can't force anyone to want to learn this material. They have to already want to learn it if they're going to be A or B students."

In summary, this is your fault. You've gotten used to the teachers spoonfeeding you all of the material on the test and giving you extra credit, freebies, etc. Welcome to the real world. You're going to have to work a little harder to pass this class (not that a D in highschool chem is going to affect anything, it won't even affect college admissions).

Hah, that's nothing. If we're here to brag, then here's a story for you

I transferred out of low division Senior English into the AP section because the lower division was way too easy (I had 112% in British Literature after first semester). The upper division english teacher has her PhD in English and everyone called her by the "doctor" title as a consequence of that. She was wicked tough, and few people ever got an A in her AP English course because she demanded that you work rigorously.

First half of the first semester she had her students write 20-page research papers. She wanted me to write one before I could come into her class. Over a 2-day weekend I thoroughly researched for and wrote a paper with 15 citations/references. I got a 93 on the paper 😛 Most of the students worked for MONTHS.

4000 word essay is what, a little less than 8 pages? We wrote 500-word essays daily. We didn't even break a sweat 😛

I came to college with 27 credits spread across a variety of subjects. IB program, AP program, Honors, it's all the same. People claim IB is so much tougher, but I've SEEN the curriculum for IB courses and it's no different from AP. The material doesn't change. All high school chemistry courses do pretty much the same easy junk. It's not rocket science. You're not even required to derive anything (except AP Physics and BC Calc we had to do a few derivations, don't know about other high schools)
