My CDROM drive tries to read a CD while I'm typing in a URL

When i was typing in a URL, the CDROM kept spinning as if its trying to seek some data on a CD. I don't know why its doing this, it lags my computer down.

I get the exact same thing on my computer. When I type up 'forums.anandtech.com' and i start typing 'forums.' my internet explorer fills in the 'anandtech.com' and when that occurs my my cd-rom starts to spin up. Any answers?

Its because it has to spin up the hard drive because IE looks for things starting with f... in the cd rom drive. As far as I know, the only solution is to remove the cdrom from the cdrom drive.

This behavior started with IE 4.x (?). It's annoying. Happens if you fire-up Explorer, too, after rebooting. In fact any application that uses the Windows APIs to enumerate drives will cause it. I know if no way to stop it...perhaps by completely removing IE but who knows?

yeah, i found that by pressing the eject button, it stops the spinning. seems like a lot of us are having this problem, not all the time though.
