My CD-ROM drive just exploded...

I was installing UT and I noticed that it was going slower than normal.. All the sudden, the front of the CD-ROM drive blew off and flew across the room and hit the wall. Parts of the UT CD flew all over the place. The CD-ROM drive started making weird noises and the computer was frozen. I restarted and it showed that the CD-ROM drive was still detectable and everything. The front pieces of the drive are still alright (they're not broken) and it doesn't look like anything is internally wrong with the drive (except a bunch of small pieces of the destroyed UT CD). When the front blew off, it sounded about as loud as a gunshot.. It scared the living crap out of me. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. What could have made this happen?

Could there have been a manufacturing defect in the disk which could have adversly reacted to the laser in the drive?

That's the only thing I could think of.. But now I'm having another problem.

Whenever I open a large file on the hard drive, the same slowdown occurs and everything.. Luckily, once I noticed this, I stopped the transfer of the file (thinking that the hard drive might do the same thing). Could these two problems be related?

I'd say most likely a capacitor blew up. Put some burn marks on your hand and you can sue the manufacturer :p

I've heard of the CD's being unbalanced and spinning so fast that they literally break apart....but never heard of the entire faceplate getting blown off...well...until now...hehehe

I got one for you. A week ago my Memorex 48X CDROM caught fire in my computer. Yep smoke was everywhere and luckily I had a HD cooler just below it that vented it out so I could see it in time. The burnt plastic smelled so nasty. Told tech support and they couldn't believe it. Got the stupid thing for $20 from Staples. At least it had a 1 year warranty but I'm afraid to put the new one it when it arrives.

Just make sure to keep a fire extinguisher close buy. I guess computers are more dangerous than I thought.

Perhaps all you maximum overclockers should invest not only in case fans, but an internal Halon fire system. R.

Dude this thing happened to my Asus S-500 ..........It scared the hell out of me too....The CD was broken into small mirror fragements and the CDROM drive got stuck. I had to give it to a local technician to get the thing working back again. The only reason it happens is because of the quality of the CDs. It generally happens to old and cheap CDs.
