My system, about 4 years old consists of:
Pent III, 1 ghz, 512mb DDR memory
40gb HD (Quantum FireballP AS40.0
Device manager shows the following under DVD/CD-ROM Drives:
ATAPI CD-R/RW 12X8X32 (the CD drive that came with the system)
MAD DOG MD-16DVD9 (added later)
OS: WinXP Home Ed. SP-2
Norton Anti Virus 2002 & ZoneAlarm Pro version:6.1.737.000 (fire wall) both kept up to date.
I've never had any problem with this system the last several years until just recently. when the system began acting sluggish. I used the CD drive about 3 weeks ago and it was fine.
Just the other day while adding more graphic files I received a message that I was low on storage space and that I should make more room by deleting or moving some of the files or the system could become unstable.
I grabbed some CD's and started to drag and drop files (in Windows Explorer) into my D drive (the CD-R/RW). The files copied over to the Temp folder successfully. When I clicked to Write the files to the CD....Up came the window " Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard .....There was an error in the writing process. The disk you have attempted to write may no longer be usable"
The problem is that I tried several new CD's (32X ...:1x-32x compatible) and I still get the same message.
During some attempts the CD in the tray wasn't even recognized.
The CD drive will read the disk ok, just can't write to it anymore.
In Device Manager the CD drive shows that it is working normally.
I want to move the larger graphic files off the system so that the system will hopefully return to normal operation. In the worst case, I'd like to just back up my files to CD in case the system is on it's way out. The DVD Drive is read only.
My virus definitions were up to date so I ran a full system scan in SAFE MODE. It did catch one infection .... the Trojan.adclicker. It was quarantined and there were no values listed for it in the Registry Keys that Norton said to check for.
The only app I added recently was ITunes ... but I deleted it yesterday just incase there was a conflict. I also performed a System Restore to a date I know the system was operating correctly, just in case some file or driver was corrupted. Nothing has helped; except that with deleting some of the other major programs I use, I'm having less system hang ups.
Any ideas what has happened and what I should try next to get my CD drive to write again? Help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
