My husband and I are wine lovers, but we're also bargain shoppers, so we tend to try a lot of cheap wines and then go back and buy any varieties we particularly liked (Kirkland Ranch 2001 Cab FTW!) We go through a lot of bad wine, but we have amassed a decent collections without too much expendeture.
So recently I picked up a $6 wine called "Le Freak". It's a syrah-viognier blend, and I figured that for $6, why not give it a try? Hadn't heard of anybody blending those grapes together before.
Well, it's not a bad wine, for $6. It's not stellar, but it's quaffable. However, I found out why it's $6. CHEAPEST CORKS EVER! The cork would not hold together - the slightest tug on a wine opener and it would disintegrate into little pieces. So, after getting 3/4s of the cork out, and managing to push the other 1/4 of the cork in, I popped a wine pourer on it to filter out the larger chunks, and poured. Not bad. A little chewy, but not bad.
And BTW, I don't have a cat.
Just so this thread isn't a total waste, what other good cheap wines have you guys found?
- 2001 Kirkland Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. Sells for $30 online, we buy for $3 at Grocery Outlet.
- Dunwood Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. Both under $6
- Glen Ellen Pinot Grigio Under $5
- Albertoni Sangiovese, Barbera, and Primitivo. All about $4.
