Alright, last saturday I was stepping over my cat laying outside of my room. I thought I had plenty of room to clear her but when I stepped down a noise so shocking came from her and she bolted across the room, big eyed and puffed up. I thought she was fine, I didn't see anything horribly wrong with her from across the room so I proceeded to get ready, and left to see my girlfriend.

That night coming home at ~11:30 I go to take a dump and here comes my cat (named Kitty) and rubs against my leg (you know, like cats do) and what do I see but blood now on my leg. I investigate just to see that about 2 inches from the end of her tail there there is a chunk (big chunk approx. 1" long going 3/4 of the way around her tail) is missing and blood is oozing.

I flip out on my parents for not having seen it before I did. Investigating further I see that the cut/bite/step is down to the bone and serious (can't just bandage it up and be done with it).

So I get my gf on the phone b/c she has experience with overnight vets. I get her to come over and call the vet. Now about 11:50pm.

$80 walk in fee (just to get in the door because it so late at night)

Alright, something needs to be done so we drive over there. Vet says best thing is to amputate....so she'll be missing 3-4 inches of the end of her tail.
If they don't amputate it may get infected and might have to take off her entire tail later.

They come in with estimate with $325-$475 total (including walk in fee). I like this pet, think its worth it and give the go ahead. I leave her there for the operation around 1:50am.

Next day (Sunday)(had to put the cat under, and made sure she woke up, so she had to stay overnight) I come in to get my cat...She looked horrible, and had a pink cast on the end of her tail and a satellite dish around her head. I take her home.

Thursday, my mom takes her to get the cast and stiches (5 of them) out of her tail. Brings her home and I take pictures. linkie

I was wanting to get pictures the night of but couldn't locate my camera until Thursday...So I only have pictures of the aftermath.

Vet said that cats sometimes get up in high places (high shelves in closets and such) and jump off, get their tail stuck and rip a part off. This may have been the reason. Still have yet to find the ripped off chunk around the house though. Kitty is recovering.

End cost for the vet was just $254. Not sure why it was so below the estimate, but very glad.

EEEW!
Poor kitty. That wasn't too bad an amount of money. I've known people to spend 1000's for their pet. I would even if broke.

Yep, but I also had to put into consideration that I just had to paid ~$370 for car fix, and just got a bill from the hospital for an EKG I had ($640) that I'm not sure why my insurance didn't pay any of.

Keep in mind, I'm 20 years old, full time college student and work ~25hours/week.

So the "needle" would have been about 80 bucks. Should have done that. Then think about all the money you would have saved with the upkeep. Food, litter, saved furniture.

Nah, glad I did what I did. Luckily my father reimbursed me for the amount a couple days later (unexpected).

ouch.

Could it be that you accidnetly stepped on the cats tail and did it?

Suprised that you didn't think of that before. Or was the step down gentle and far too light to cause such damage?

hope your cat makes a full recovery......

I had thought of that before, but the thought that countered it would have been that I would have seen a chunk of tail on the floor after I stepped on her...and there was none.

Unless you weigh about 500 pounds and were wearing klogs or high heal's when this happend, I doubt you were the cause of the injury. Glad to hear your pet is ok, you did the right thing in making sure she got taken care of. People who take the way of the shot are either completely broke and unable to take care of the fee's, or just plain heartless.

sounds like kitty did something to herself somehow and when you stepped on her you opened it back up

Thanks for everyone's sympathy/good wishes. She really is doing much better. Doesn't have to wear the satellite dish anymore.

Biggest problem now is getting her to take her medicine.
