My cat just moved in with me - advice needed!

My parents have moved into an apartment and aren't allowed pets. My cat is eleven years old, his name is Moe. Rather than see him put down, I decided to take him in. I live in a shared house with three other guys.

My rents just dropped him off. At first, he was obviously disorientated. After a quick investigation of the house, I fed him. Now, he's lying in the upstairs hallway, trying to catnap.

He is an indoor/outdoor cat and I would like to eventually let him roam around outside, but for now I think it's best he learn his new surroundings.

I can see he's a little uneasy, and this is expected, but I'd like to know what I can do to make him settle in. He's got his favourite blankets, toys, etc.

Go to the pet store and buy some mice. Set them all loose in the house and your cat will love you.:D

Tranquilize him and put a little chain and paw-cuff around his leg and chain him to the wall.

Eventually, he'll realize that he's a little pissant living in a big world and should behave. Failing that, it's time for the big Injection in the Paw and night-night he goes.

Damn pets; it sucks when people let lesser-things run their lives.

That's a big kitty! :)

He'll get used to his new place, no worries.

don't let your roommates scare/chase/taunt/whatever to the cat and it'll settle in faster

This is Moe.

he's very cute!

really all you need to do to help him settle in is show him where his dishes and his litter box and his blankies are.. and pay attention to him, when he wants you to.

we used to travel with our previous cat pretty often, and she always settled in pretty quickly.. soon as she'd wandered the whole house. moved her twice, too. she was an exclusively indoor cat, but she did get out once at the house we lived in when we first moved here.. we were only there for 6 months and the landlord had required a large pet deposit in order that he could cover the cost of flea-treating the house when we moved out.. got that back.. heh. we came home one day, had family visiting so we arrived back at the house kind of distracted.. I was unlocking the front door and noticed this cat comin' across the yard.. commented that it looked a lot like squirrel, went on about my business.. cat kept comin', meowin' the whole way.. I looked again.. wait.. that IS squirrel.. landlord had come in with some repair guy and they'd let her out. actually, they'd gone up into the attic and left the front door standin' wide open the whole time. I called him up and lit into him.. the fact that there was no advance notice of the "visit" was beside the point.. he had no business letting my cat out! he KNEW she was indoor cat. only satisfaction I got was tellin' him that if there were fleas in that house when we moved out they'd be his fault, and I was NOT payin' for 'em.. to his credit he was appropriately contrite.. and I got my deposit back the next week.

oh.. the point of that.. heh.. that raw nerve just won't heal! she'd never been outside in this state, and she did find her way back home just fine. so.. just show him where the stuff that's important to him is, give him all the attention he wants, make sure the roommates are nice to him! and keep him close to home until he's sure he IS home.. and he'll be good.

he really is cute.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

He seems to be taking well to the new house. He's relaxed around my roommates, which is a relief. He's eating well and even managed to find and use his litter tray all on his own. I did show him where it was and I'm quite impressed he used it so quickly. He already knows which room is mine and has taken it upon himself to reclaim my bed, which is amusing as he hasn't slept on it in years.

We'll see how the night goes. I anticipate not getting a full night's sleep, but the sacrifice is worth it.

Awww... cutie!! :D

Having things he's used to is definitely a good idea. It's great that you have so many of his things there. He'll adjust on his own. Just give him lots of love and let him find his own way. :D
