My cat is headbutting me!!!!

when its feeding time and im upstairs, my cat wanders up and meows in my face a lot, so i get up and head down the stairs, we have banisters with alternating spindle/slat type supports.....as i go down stairs slowly, if i stroke his back he starts to headbutt the slats and spindles.......mostly gently, but sometimes he misjudges in his excitement at impending full dinner bowl so he practically charges into a slat.....lol...daft twit....
