When I turn on the fan in my car, the wind smells like... the engine. It's not an awful smell, but its uncomfortable. Does this mean its time to change the air filter? I'm a car newbie.

Fungus in the air filter. Pretty common; happened on my car. Change the filter and you'll be good to go.

I thought you were sticking your head behind the radiator and sniffing the cooling fan from the title.

Or fungus in the entire ventilation system, that also happens and is more difficult to cure.

Also, you may have a bad heater core that is leaking, or an exhaust leak that is finding its way to the air ducts.
