My car "stutters" when I GUN it.

I noticed the last 2 days, that when I tromp the gas (to fly out into traffic) my car stutters, until I let off the gas. It seems like it is either getting too much fuel, or not enough.

What do you think the problem is? It has never done this before, and I run it pretty hard. It's a '92 Civic, with 240k miles on it. I will prolly get some fuel line cleaner (kill carbon deposits), and maybe get some new spark plugs for it.

It just kinda scares me, drivin in the city when you have to pull accross a few lanes in heavy traffic..... and as you tromp the gas, it stutters out in the middle of the lane :(

Try some carb cleaner and run a few tanks of high test gas thru it. If that doesn't work have your mechanic put a rebuild kit in it.

I hate it when people have no idea what they're talking about, but post anyway pretending to have valid advice.

lol, I was thinking the same thing.

I love those fix-it-all "rebuild kits"

Have you ever changed the plug wires or the cap/rotor on the distributor? With the car idling, watch all the plug wires closely, if there is any arcing, change them now. Even if the wires aren't arcing, I'd suggest replacing them if they haven't been replaced. Also, check the distributor cap and rotor for any evidence of arcing. When you check the distributor cap, leave the plug wires connected or otherwise mark which wire goes on which part of the cap otherwise you'll screw up the firing order and it won't run right at all.

It could also be the distributor's advance not functioning properly, but plug wires, cap, rotor and plugs are a cheaper way to go, more probable, and they would probably be a good idea anyway.

My car does this too, my friend seems to think it's the fuel pump, considering that the spark plugs/wires, rotor and distributor cap have all been replaced. Mine is a big ol' buick though.

Sounds like the fuel pump to me. I doubt it's the oxygen (O2) sensor. It's hard to say if it's getting not enough or too much gas (sometimes have the same "symptoms"). If it's the original pump i'd replace it. Those hondas run forever, don't they?

Do you think you could point out where the carburetor is on a 92 Honda Civic?

Does it stutter when going up a hill and you try to accelerate? If so, I would check the plugs and wires. I had a wire that burned and was arcing and finally stopped working. Also, how has your gas milage been? My gas milage went way down because of that one cylender not working.

240k miles on it

...uhhh...yea. I have a 93 Eagle Talon with 209,000 miles, and I replaced the engine and numerous other parts at about 206,000. It runs much better now.
